Position: Kitchen Support
Reports To: Sous Chef / Chef
General Outline
Assists with various kitchen tasks, helps maintain cleanliness and organization of the kitchen, and assists chefs and cooks in light food prep work for events.
Duties and Responsibilities
· Load, run and unload dish machine and/or follows 3-compartment sink method of dish washing
· Wash and store all tableware and kitchenware
· Remove trash in the dish, kitchen and preparation areas to the designated area and clean kitchen garbage containers
· Sweeps and mops walk-ins, kitchen and loading/unloading areas
· Assists with deliveries and stocking supplies as required
· Ensure the dish and kitchen areas are kept clean and sanitized throughout shift and monitor product supply, replenish when needed
- Identifies and informs Sous Chef / Chef when supplies are getting low or equipment is not working properly
- Follows established principles and schedules (daily, weekly, monthly) of sanitation for cleaning
- May assist with light food prep duties such as chopping, washing and portioning ingredients
- May assist with food packaging and transport for catering events
- Performs other duties as assigned
Health and Safety Requirements
- Complies with occupational health and safety requirements for working safely (lifting, knife safety, wet floor procedures and hot oven safety)
- Uses personal protective and safety equipment as required
- Uses principles of sanitation; wash, rinse and sanitize dishes, equipment and tools, counters frequently and/or as needed throughout each shift to reduce cross contamination possibilities
Skills and Responsibilities
- Ability to communicate with customers and co-workers effectively and with courtesy and respect; may have basic, limited written tasks
- Ability to follow established procedures and instructions in routine tasks
- Ability to work efficiently in order to meet production timelines; may prioritize some tasks
- Works as a team member and helps other staff when required; occasionally may assist with orientation and the training of new staff, if asked
- Ability to work effectively and to work without error to avoid impacts such as product waste and loss of time to redo or remake; limited responsibility for safety of others except to ensure work area is clean, uncluttered and left in a safe manner; works with limited confidential information
Qualifications
Education
· Minimum of grade 12 education preferred
· Current Safe Food Handlers Certificate
· Must be able to read and write English
· Must be able to understand and follow verbal and written instructions
Experience
· Previous experience in food service environments would be an asset
· Understanding of kitchen equipment safety and sanitation procedures
· Demonstrates decision making, problem solving and communication skills
· Understands and follows knife handling skills and safety requirements
Working Demands and Conditions
- Required to frequently use unbroken sensory demands for up to 1 hour uninterrupted each day for preparing and assembling food products, serving customers, and cleaning work area
- Work may require physical demands for cleaning, moving food products, for periods up to 1 hour
- Must lift weights up to 4.5 kilograms/10 pounds on a daily basis
- Must stand or walk for up to 2 hours, without a break to serve customers, prepare and assemble food products, clear tables
- Frequent exposure to potentially hazardous environments including kitchen equipment such as knives, hot ovens, floor conditions causing slips tips and falls
- Frequent exposure to disagreeable working environments including extreme kitchen temperatures, cleaning chemicals
- Limited exposure to stressful working conditions other than working in a somewhat fast paced environment
- Occasionally deals with difficult customers but can refer to manager
