Job Summary
The Chief of Police is a vital leadership role responsible for overseeing the law enforcement operations within the community. This position requires a dedicated professional who can develop strategic initiatives, ensure public safety, and foster positive relationships between law enforcement and residents.
Reporting to The Board of Police Commissioners, the Chief of Police is required to provide management for all Town Police functions and resources as well as quality services and programs to stakeholders in accordance with statutory requirements and guidelines, and within approved budgets. Regular hours of work are 9 am--5 pm, but the Police Chief may at times be required to work irregular hours and hours may have to be adjusted to meet the needs of the service.
Duties
- Provide overall leadership and direction for the police department, including setting goals and policies.
- Manage daily operations, ensuring effective law enforcement services are delivered to the community.
- Develop and implement strategic plans to enhance public safety and crime prevention.
- Supervise department personnel, including hiring, training, evaluating performance, and fostering professional development.
- Collaborate with community organizations, government officials, and other stakeholders to address public safety concerns.
- Oversee investigations, emergency response coordination, and crime analysis efforts.
- Ensure compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, and departmental policies.
- Prepare reports for elected officials and the public regarding departmental activities and crime statistics.
- Maintain a high standard of integrity, professionalism, and ethical conduct within the department.
Skills
- Extensive experience and trained at an approved Canadian Police Academy with at least fifteen (15) years of policing experience, ideally with five (5) years in police leadership.
- Proven leadership abilities with experience managing teams and leading organizational change.
- Excellent communication skills to effectively interact with community members, government officials, and staff.
- Strong decision-making capabilities under pressure with sound judgment.
- Ability to develop strategic initiatives that promote community safety and departmental efficiency.
- Knowledge of the relevant provisions of the Nova Scotia Police Act and Regulations, Criminal Code, the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, the Motor Vehicle Act, Town By-laws, and other relevant federal and provincial legislation.
- Ability to foster teamwork, motivate staff, and uphold high ethical standards. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a commitment to public service excellence, possess robust leadership qualities, and have a thorough understanding of law enforcement principles to serve effectively as the Chief of Police.
Pay: $87,500.00-$92,856.00 per year
