About the Position
We are currently seeking an experienced Asphalt Finish Rake Man / Working Foreman to join our growing team. This is not an entry-level position. We are looking for someone with 5+ years of hands-on asphalt experience, preferably on municipal roads, city streets, subdivisions, driveways, road restoration, and public infrastructure projects.
The successful candidate will be a working leader who takes pride in producing high-quality asphalt work while supervising and mentoring less experienced crew members.
Responsibilities
- Perform finish raking for municipal roadways, driveways, road restorations, and asphalt repairs.
- Lead asphalt crews while maintaining a productive and safe work environment.
- Coordinate daily work with crew members and equipment operators.
- Order asphalt from suppliers and communicate delivery requirements.
- Prepare and grade asphalt base to proper elevations.
- Ensure proper drainage, water flow, and smooth transitions to existing road conditions.
- Match existing grades, road profiles, curbs, sidewalks, and surrounding infrastructure.
- Perform asphalt reinstatement following curb, sidewalk, catch basin, and utility repairs.
- Complete full residential and commercial apron installations.
- Direct labourers and equipment operators to ensure efficient workflow.
- Conduct quality control throughout the paving process.
- Follow municipal specifications, project drawings, and company standards.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe job site.
Equipment You'll Work Around
Candidates must be comfortable working safely around:
- Asphalt rollers
- Skid steers
- Backhoes
- Excavators
- Dump trucks
- Plate compactors
- Asphalt cutting equipment
- Other heavy construction equipment
Preferred Qualifications
- Minimum 5 years of asphalt finish raking experience (Required)
- Extensive experience with municipal street restoration and road paving.
- Strong understanding of grading, elevations, drainage, and asphalt finishing techniques.
- Ability to lead crews while remaining hands-on throughout the day.
- Experience working around catch basins, curbs, sidewalks, utility cuts, and road restoration.
- Ability to read site conditions and make adjustments to achieve proper drainage and finished grades.
- Strong communication and leadership skills.
- Reliable, punctual, and dependable.
- Able to work long hours during peak paving season and in hot summer conditions.
- Physically fit and capable of performing demanding manual labour.
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced team environment.
Bonus Skills
The following experience is considered a significant asset:
- Operating an asphalt paving spreader.
- Operating an asphalt cold planer (milling machine).
- Experience with municipal restoration contracts.
- AZ or DZ Licence.
- Traffic control experience.
Requirements
- Valid Ontario G Class Driver's Licence.
- Clean Driver's Abstract.
- Reliable transportation to various job sites.
- Strong work ethic with attention to detail.
- Ability to work overtime and occasional weekends when required.
