We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Assistant Insectary Technician to join our growing production team in Leamington, Ontario.
Position Summary
The Assistant Insectary Technician supports the production, quality control, packaging, and maintenance of beneficial insects and predatory mites used in commercial greenhouse crop protection programs. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys working with living organisms, has strong attention to detail, and is comfortable performing repetitive tasks requiring precision and accuracy.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with the rearing and maintenance of beneficial insects and predatory mites.
- Monitor insect and mite colonies to ensure optimal health and production.
- Conduct quality control inspections using microscopes and other laboratory equipment.
- Identify mites, insects, eggs, and life stages for quality assurance purposes.
- Prepare, package, label, and ship biological control products.
- Maintain accurate production and quality control records.
- Clean and sanitize rearing rooms, equipment, and workstations.
- Assist with inventory management and production scheduling.
- Follow standard operating procedures (SOPs), biosecurity, and workplace safety requirements.
- Support research, development, and improvement projects as required.
QualificationsRequired
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to follow written procedures.
- Comfortable working with insects, mites, and other biological organisms.
- Good manual dexterity and ability to perform repetitive tasks accurately.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Basic computer skills for data entry and record keeping.
- Ability to stand, walk, and perform light lifting throughout the workday.
Preferred
- Experience in greenhouse production, agriculture, horticulture, laboratory work, or insect rearing.
- Experience using microscopes.
- Basic understanding of insects, mites, or biological control organisms.
- Post-secondary education in biology, entomology, agriculture, horticulture, or a related field.
