Position Overview
We are a growing Calgary-based accounting firm offering bookkeeping, corporate accounting, tax compliance, and payroll services to small and mid-sized businesses across Alberta, Ontario, British Colombia. Due to continued growth, we are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Accounting Technician / Staff Accountant I to join our team.
This role is ideally suited to a candidate with approximately two years of practical experience in accounting or public practice who is ready to take ownership of client files under senior supervision. You bring strong software skills, particularly Excel, ERP systems and tax platforms and are eager to grow within a professional firm environment.

Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be responsible for, but not limited to, the following:
Bookkeeping & Corporate Accounting
- Maintain full-cycle bookkeeping for assigned corporate clients using QuickBooks Online, QuickBooks Desktop, and/or Sage 50
- Post journal entries, process accounts payable and receivable, and maintain accurate general ledgers
- Perform bank, credit card, and intercompany reconciliations on a monthly basis
- Assist with month-end and year-end close procedures under senior review
Tax Compliance
- Prepare and e-file GST/HST returns; reconcile GST accounts to the general ledger
- Prepare T1 personal income tax returns for individuals with employment income, rental income, and straightforward self-employment income using DTMax, TaxCycle, or Intuit Profile
- Assist in the preparation of T2 corporate income tax returns under the direction of a senior accountant
- Prepare T4, T4A, and T5 slips and related year-end information returns
- Organize and maintain CRA correspondence, deadlines, and client tax files
Payroll Support
- Assist with bi-weekly or semi-monthly payroll processing for client accounts
- Calculate source deductions and prepare CRA payroll remittances
- Support preparation of Records of Employment (ROEs) and payroll year-end filings
Reporting & Administration
- Build and maintain Excel workbooks for client reconciliations, GST tracking, and financial summaries
- Compile basic financial reports (income statement, balance sheet) for client review
- Liaise with clients via email and phone to request supporting documentation and clarify transactions
- Maintain organized digital client files in the firm’s document management system
Qualifications Required
- Post-secondary diploma or degree in accounting, business administration, or a related field from a recognized Canadian institution
- Minimum 1.5 to 2 years of directly related accounting experience; public practice or multi-client bookkeeping environment strongly preferred
- Demonstrated working knowledge of at least one professional tax platform: DTMax (T1/T2), TaxCycle, or Intuit Profile
- Proficiency in QuickBooks Online, ERP Systems (ODOO preferred), and/or Sage 50 for full-cycle bookkeeping
- Strong Microsoft Excel skills, including pivot tables, VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, SUMIF/SUMIFS, and reconciliation workbook design
- Solid understanding of GST/HST rules, CRA filing deadlines, and source deduction requirements
- High degree of accuracy and attention to detail; ability to manage multiple client files and deadlines simultaneously
- Professional written and verbal communication skills; comfortable corresponding directly with clients

Preferred / Assets
- Currently enrolled in or planning to pursue CPA designation
- Experienced in or exposure to CaseWare Working Papers preferable
- Familiarity with payroll softwares
- Exposure to document management tools
- QuickBooks ProAdvisor certification or Sage certification or willingness to complete the certifications
