We are seeking a Senior Civil Estimator to join our team. You are responsible for civil infrastructure and specializes in sewer and watermain construction, road reconstruction, site servicing, earthworks, paving, etc.
The ideal candidate will have a high level of attention to detail, excellent oral and written communication, and experience working for a Civil General Contractor. The ideal individual will also love what they do, be self-motivated and accountable, and adaptable.
The Senior Estimator will be responsible for estimating a variety of Municipal Road infrastructure projects, Provincially and Federally funded highway bridge/culvert projects, light industrial projects relating to the oil and gas industries with a direct contribution to cost management and budgeting for various high-level projects. You will be responsible for gathering all data required for preparing lump sum, unit rate and cost-plus detailed estimates along with conceptual estimating, cost analysis and estimate coordination.
Responsibilities
- Oversee department standards for deliverables such as bid packages, deliverable formats, and budget tracking tools
- Preparation of estimates ranging from 0.5 Mil to 20 Mil for sewer and watermain projects, underground infrastructure renewal, residential subdivisions, road construction and paving, parking lots, building excavation and backfill, structural culverts and bridges, earthworks, landfill construction, creek remediations, shoreline protection, etc.
- Review plans and specifications for completeness
- Upon review of drawings and specifications, proactively analyze possible risks and develop solutions
- Promptly escalate all issues, questions, and concerns relating to tender challenges if they arise
- Actively seek and coordinate assistance from the operations team for decisions regarding the sequence of operations, site constraints, crew sizes, productivity factors, and project schedule
- Perform or delegate project takeoffs utilizing different software programs (SAGE estimating preferred)
- Develop detailed estimates using SAGE Estimating Software and adjust standard default bid items and activities when required for best accuracy, crew makeup, productions, risks associated with each task and overall risk.
- Solicitation of prices from Subcontractors and Suppliers using Procore Project Management Systems.
- Review requirements for bonding and insurance and secure pricing and commitments for same as required
- Prepare bid submission documents, including bid deposits, proposal letters, conceptual plans and schedules, and tender forms
- Develop conceptual site designs, prepare and submit design and price proposals for Design-Build Projects
- Develop and maintain estimating tools/unit rates and ensure that tools and costing are being used appropriately
- Analyze and compile data from past projects that can influence costs and efficiencies of future projects
- Train and mentor junior estimators by reviewing their estimates and take-off assignments
- Assigns responsibilities for the estimating team on each project
- Conduct peer review of estimates prepared by other team members
- Perform site visits and attend pre-construction meetings to identify site constraints and project challenges
- Develop and maintain strong working relationships with clients, consultants, subcontractors, and suppliers
- Be responsible and accountable for the projects, tasks and timelines that are assigned
- Assist with determining which jobs to put through the bid process and which jobs to pass up due to the current circumstances of the company, marketplace, and economic conditions
- Reviews project plans and specifications and coordinates with the team to confirm complete scope
- Ensures the flow of project information is maintained and documented
- Review designs and specifications for cost effectiveness; provide recommendations for alternatives
- Proactively handle construction-related questions from sub-trades and suppliers
- Liaise with the Business Development function to ensure they are apprised of the high-level details regarding the estimate
- Review of completed estimates vs. the estimates for improvement of the accuracy of future estimates
- Participate in the estimate/project handover meeting with Operations
- Establishes a critical path schedule including milestone dates and completion timelines to meet contract completion dates for large projects.
- Completes full quantity take-off of all labor, equipment, and materials for larger scopes. Reviews current material and construction equipment pricing
- Challenges team and project to find creative solutions for overall project benefit.
- Overtime as necessary to meet project deadlines.
- Advises management on strategic pursuit initiatives and opportunities.
- Complete other duties as assigned
Qualifications
- Minimum 8 years of experience in Civil construction and cost estimating with onsite experience preferred
- Bachelor’s degree in related discipline or Trade experience or equivalent.
- Formal education in Construction (Diploma/Certificate) is considered an asset
- Gold Seal Certification in estimating is an asset (CDN).
- Understanding of a construction work site is considered an asset. Ability to document and organize complex streams of information efficiently, and accurately with minimal information
- 1-5 years as a Civil Superintendent or 5+ years as a Foreman/General Foreman is an asset
- Clearly communicate estimating concepts to various individuals in the organization
- Demonstrated organizational and communication skills (written, oral, interpersonal)
- Ability to lead by example and set standards of professionalism
- Proficiency with computers (Microsoft Office, SAGE Estimating, MS Project, Procore PM System)
- Extensive knowledge of key principles involved in bid preparation, including quantity take-off procedures, trade contractor procurement, pricing and bid closing procedures.
- Expert in understanding and teaching contract terms for various delivery models and able to identify contract risks and opportunity.
- Understands different bid processes and contract delivery type methods: Hard bid/lump sum, guaranteed maximum price (GMP), unit price, design-build, etc
- Ability to lead successful teams.
- Resourceful and self-motivated with strong organizational skills and ability to multitask.
- Familiarity and experience with MMCD and CCDC contract administration.
- Strong civil construction background (municipal utilities, excavation, base prep, drainage, earthworks, bridge building, retaining walls etc.)
- Valid driver's licence and clean driving record
- Must possess a strong work ethic and ability to meet deadlines

Compensation
· Annual Salary of $115,000 - $155,000 dependent on qualifications and experience. This position may offer the ability of working remotely for the successful applicant.
