Job Posting: Designated Support Staff (Part-Time)

Wage: $17.00–$19.00 per hour (commensurate with experience)
Location: BGC Durham (various sites)
Reports To: Inclusion & Behaviour Support Coordinator
About the Role:
The Designated Support Staff plays a vital role in supporting children and youth (ages 4–15) who require additional assistance to participate successfully in our camp and recreational programs. This position provides one-on-one or small group support to help participants engage fully in activities such as arts and crafts, singing, sports, swimming, games, and field trips—all while maintaining a safe, inclusive environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide direct supervision and individualized support to assigned participants.
- Create a safe, welcoming, and accommodating environment.
- Work with children who may have physical, sensory, speech/language, behavioural, or emotional challenges, or multiple exceptionalities.
- Assist with developing and adapting activities based on the child’s interests and needs.
- Ensure inclusive programming through active modeling of HIGH FIVE® principles (Participation, Play, Mastery, Friends, Caring Adult).
- Collaborate with staff and volunteers to foster an inclusive atmosphere.
- Prepare and deliver age- and theme-appropriate daily activities.
- Use a variety of tools and strategies to help each participant succeed.
- Attend all mandatory online and in-person trainings and meetings.
Qualifications:
- Minimum of 1 year of experience working with children or youth with exceptionalities.
- Strong communication, program planning, and leadership skills.
- Certification in Non-Violent Crisis Intervention, Behaviour Management Systems, or Crisis Intervention Training is an asset.
- Valid Standard First Aid & CPR-C certification.
- HIGH FIVE® certification is an asset.
- Positive, patient, and empathetic approach to working with children.
Employment Conditions:
- Must be 18 years of age or older.
- Available to work part-time hours (3–25 hrs/week) between 7:00 AM and 6:00 PM, Monday to Friday.
- Comply with BGC Durham safety and operating procedures.
- Professional and respectful interaction with the public, coworkers, and families.
- Successful candidates must submit a Vulnerable Sector Screening and complete required training (e.g., HIGH FIVE®, First Aid/CPR) upon hire.
