Job Summary
We are seeking a driven Health and Safety Coordinator to join our team and play a critical role in leading and supporting the health and safety program at the Hammerdown Gold Project near King’s Point, NL.
This is an exceptional opportunity to help ensure the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of our occupational health and safety (OHS) programs, systems, and practices, while supporting leaders, supervisors, employees, and contractors in meeting company standards and regulatory requirements. The Hammerdown Gold Project, an open pit gold mining operation, supplies run-of-mine feed to our Pine Cove Mill located approximately 100 km away. This permanent, full-time position is primarily Monday to Friday at the Hammerdown Gold Project, offering a collaborative work environment and the prospect of personal and professional development.
Responsibilities: As Health and Safety Coordinator, you will be part of a dynamic team. Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Lead and actively drive the implementation and continuous improvement of site health and safety systems, procedures, standards, and safe work practices.
- Partner with operational leaders in hazard identification, risk assessment, and control planning (e.g., JHAs/JSA, FLHAs, critical control verification).
- Lead or support incident reporting and investigations, including root-cause analysis, corrective actions, and follow-up verification.
- Plan, lead, and execute health and safety audits and inspections, track findings and ensure prompt resolution of identified non-conformances and close-out of corrective actions.
- Coordinate health and safety training and orientation for employees and contractors (e.g., onboarding, task-specific training, competency verification, refresher programs).
- Function as the primary health and safety contact for coordination with site personnel and contractors.
- Provide guidance and support on health and safety policies, legal obligations, commitments, standards, procedures, and applicable legislation.
- Maintain required OHS records and reporting, including leading and lagging indicators, statistics, and compliance documentation.
- Ensure emergency response preparedness (plans, drills, equipment checks) and take part in emergency response activities, as needed.
- Facilitate safety meetings, toolbox talks, and communication initiatives to promote a strong safety culture.
- Partner with contractors to ensure alignment with site safety expectations, including prequalification review and contractor performance monitoring.
- Collaborate with HR and site leadership on return-to-work and injury management processes, as applicable.Stay current on applicable legislation, standards, and best practices; recommend updates to programs and controls.
- Other duties aligned with site health and safety leadership may be assigned as needed.
Requirements - What you bring to the field
- Post-secondary education in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Health, Industrial Hygiene, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Minimum of 5 years’ progressive health and safety experience, preferably in mining, construction, heavy industrial, or remote/site-based operations.
- Professional designation or progress toward designation is preferred (e.g., CRSP/CRST/NCSO).
- Experience with incident investigation techniques and corrective action management.
- Experience developing and delivering safety training and leading field-based safety initiatives.
- Strong field presence with the ability to influence safe behaviours and build trust across a diverse workforce.
- Strong analytical and critical thinking skills, including the ability to interpret data and recognize trends.
- Excellent organizational and communication skills and detail focused.
- Ability to manage personal workload to ensure completion of tasks within assigned schedules.
- Ability to work collaboratively within cross-functional teams.
- Competent with Microsoft Office and data-management software.
- A valid Class 5 driver’s license, along with a current driver’s abstract.
Working Conditions
- Work will be a combination of office and fieldwork.
- Fieldwork may require working in extreme heat, cold, and inclement weather.
- Walking across uneven terrain will be required frequently.
