Job Summary
The Service Manager is responsible for leading the Service Department to ensure high-quality workmanship, strong customer relationships, and efficient operations. The Service Manager is expected to spend most of their time managing people, workflow, and customer service, while also assisting technicians, support complex diagnostics, or maintain workflow during busy periods.
Responsibilities
Leadership & Team Management
- Lead, coach, and support technicians, apprentices, and service writers.
- Schedule, assign, and monitor work to ensure timely, accurate, and efficient service delivery.
- Participate in recruiting, onboarding, and training of new technicians
- Promote a positive, respectful team culture that emphasizes safety, communication, and accountability.
Customer Service & Relationship Management
- Act as the main point of contact for all service customers.
- Provide accurate estimates, updates, and explanations of repair work.
- Work with Parts and Sales departments to coordinate jobs and ensure customer satisfaction.
- Resolve customer concerns promptly and professionally.
Operational Oversight
- Manage daily service workflow, ensuring work orders are opened, tracked, and closed accurately.
- Monitor department KPIs including technician efficiency, rework, and turnaround times.
- Coordinate pre-delivery inspections (PDIs), warranty repairs, and field service calls.
- Maintain shop organization, cleanliness, and tool/equipment readiness.
Administrative & Financial Responsibilities
- Ensure all jobs are documented and billed properly through CDK or equivalent DMS.
- Support budget planning, expense tracking, and forecasting for the department.
- Work with management to achieve service revenue and profit goals.
- Submit warranty claims and track manufacturer payments.
Technical (Hands-On) Responsibilities
- Perform diagnostic and repair work as required to maintain efficiency or support the team during peak workloads.
- Provide hands-on mentorship to apprentices and less experienced technicians.
- Step in to assist with complex repairs, troubleshooting, or urgent service demands.
Health, Safety & Compliance
- Ensure compliance with Alberta OHS regulations and company safety policies.
- Lead toolbox talks, inspections, and safety reporting.
- Promote a culture of safety-first behavior in all shop and field operations.
Requirements
- Journeyperson Agricultural Equipment Technician, Heavy Equipment Technician, or equivalent trade certification preferred.
- Minimum 3–5 years of mechanical service experience; management or foreman experience an asset.
- Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
- Customer-focused with proven ability to resolve issues professionally.
- Familiarity with CDK or similar dealership management systems.
- Valid Class 5 Driver’s License with a clean abstract; Class 1 or 3 an asset.
Working Conditions
- Full-time, permanent position
- Monday–Friday, 8-hour shifts with overtime and occasional weekends as needed
- Combination of shop, office, and occasional field work
