Staff Accountant
Position Summary
The Staff Accountant is a senior member of AHMA’s Finance Team, supporting the CFO and Operations Team in delivering high-quality financial reviews, reporting, and reconciliation. This role ensures the integrity of financial information, compliance with operating agreements, and consistent application of best practices across AHMA’s member organizations.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Reviews & Reporting
- Conduct annual financial reviews of member organizations in line with operating agreements.
- Analyze and interpret financial statements (Balance Sheet, Income Statement, Notes, and Management Letters).
- Monitor subsidy use, replacement reserves, extraordinary expenses, and accumulated surpluses/deficits.
- Prepare written reports, recommend adjustments, and liaise with member organizations, auditors, and internal teams.
Finance & Accounting Functions
- Manage accounts payable and receivable, including collection of past-due invoices.
- Prepare monthly and quarterly financial statements with variance analysis.
- Maintain general ledger accuracy and ensure timely completion of month-end processes.
- Support year-end audits, GST/WCB reporting, and quarterly filings.
Program & Systems Support
- Update databases, subsidy spreadsheets, and budget guide sheets.
- Investigate discrepancies and troubleshoot financial system issues.
- Support special projects, analysis, and reporting as required.
CFO & Organizational Support
- Assist with strategic financial planning, budgeting, and policy implementation.
- Draft financial reports, strategies, and recommendations for senior management and the Board.
- Represent the CFO in their absence as assigned.
Qualifications
- Post-secondary degree or diploma in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration.
- CPA designation or active candidate preferred.
- Minimum 3 years’ progressive finance or full-cycle accounting experience.
- Experience with Indigenous organizations, non-profits, or housing sector is an asset.
- Strong knowledge of accounting standards, financial reporting, and budget processes.
Skills & Competencies
- Advanced proficiency in Excel, databases, and financial systems.
- Strong analytical and investigative skills with attention to detail.
- Excellent written/oral communication and ability to explain financial issues to diverse audiences.
- Highly organized, able to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Collaborative, adaptable, and committed to Indigenous housing and community values.
