About us
We’re a boutique cross-border tax firm in Kitsilano, near Granville Island, specializing in US and Canadian personal tax for US citizens resident in Canada. If you’re doing excellent work at a larger firm but want more control of your time, more ownership of your files, and direct client relationships — without the bureaucracy — this role is built for you.
The role
Working alongside Kevin Beesley, Tomoko Wakeford, and Shivani Sachdev, you’ll review the US and Canadian cross-border personal tax work prepared by our team, prepare the most complicated files we have, own the technical quality of what goes out the door, resolve the hard cross-border questions, and mentor our junior staff. You’ll manage your own portfolio of client relationships and help shape how the practice runs.
What you’ll do
- Review and prepare Canadian (T1), US (Form 1040), FBARs and state personal returns and supporting working papers for technical accuracy and completeness, and sign off on quality
- Act as the technical go-to on cross-border individual issues — residency and treaty positions, foreign information reporting (Forms 3520/3520-A, 8938, 5471, FBAR), PFICs, cross-border pensions and registered accounts, and foreign tax credits
- Manage client relationships and lead correspondence with the CRA and IRS, including Notices of Assessment, review letters, and voluntary disclosures
- Mentor and train junior staff; write clear review notes and help build internal standards and processes
- Own filing deadlines and extensions across your portfolio
Required qualifications & skills
- You must have 5 or more years of experience working for a cross-border tax firm
- You need to know more about US and Canadian taxes than our less senior staff
- CPA (Canada or US) and/or EA designation
- Able to independently review both US (Form 1040 + state) and Canadian (T1) personal returns
- Excellent written and verbal communication — able to explain and defend positions to clients and tax authorities
- Sound judgment — able to use AI tools critically, applying their strengths without being led into errors
If this role is a fit, you should be comfortable discussing what PFICs are and how GILTI works.
Nice to have
- Experience reviewing corporate, partnership, trust, estate, information returns and elections
- Experience mentoring or managing staff
- Working knowledge of TaxPrep and CCH ProSystem fx
- Bookkeeping familiarity for individuals and/or corporations
Why you’ll want this role
- Control of your time — flexible, negotiable hours outside the busy season; you shape your own schedule
- Real ownership of your files and client relationships, without big firm layers of bureaucracy
- Expect to work 48–55 hours/week from March 1 – June 15.
- Competitive salary, plus a firm profit-based bonus and overtime pay for overtime work - $110,000 - $140,000 depending on experience and how much free time you would like.
