The Director of Care is responsible for ensuring compliance with the Long-Term Care Homes Act, as well as all relevant healthcare standards, policies, procedures, and other legislative requirements within the nursing department. Additionally, they maintain established management reporting systems and internal controls as directed.

The Responsibilities:
- Ensure the appropriate delegation of duties, responsibilities, and accountability to regulated and non-regulated nursing staff.
- Ensure appropriate management presence and nursing leadership are available in the home. Recognize that hours and days of work may be altered from time to time, based on the needs of the home.
- Direct and oversee the appropriate utilization of all resources to ensure appropriate allocation to support required care services. Develop proposals for the annual operating budget. Always ensure the availability of appropriate supplies and equipment.
- Recruit, hire, train, promote, monitor, and manage nursing services personnel; evaluate employee performance in accordance with established policy; ensure that professional staff maintain current required credentials; assist in the training of personnel in other departments.
- Make recommendations for the provision of effective and responsive education programs; ensure that legislated standards for mandatory education programs are met. Demonstrate the value of continuing education with an expectation that staff attend all required legislated education programs.
- Liaise with all other disciplines to coordinate an efficient multidisciplinary system of admission, transfer and discharge which effectively meets the needs of residents, family members, staff, and the community. Coordinate the admission interview to introduce the resident to the home and assess their needs and preferences
- Ensure the maintenance and assessment of required statistical data and operational reports for the nursing department. Ensure required submissions and reports are completed as scheduled in a timely manner.
- Safeguard that documentation in the clinical record is accurate, current, and complete. Coordinate and implement activities to ensure that care and funding requirements are met; assist in the facilitation of processes required to ensure that MDS assessments and RAPs are an accurate reflection of the residents and the care that they are provided in the home.
Education
- A Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing OR Diploma in Nursing
- Certificate of competence as a Registered Nurse with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO)
