L & M Ditching is seeking a reliable, safety-focused Hydrovac Driver to join our growing team. The successful candidate will be responsible for the safe operation and transportation of Hydrovac equipment while performing hydro excavation, utility exposure, trenching, potholing, and related underground services.
This position is primarily a Hydrovac Driver role; however, successful candidates must be willing and able to learn, perform, and support additional field, operational, and crew responsibilities as required. The ideal candidate is adaptable, team-oriented, and committed to maintaining the highest standards of safety, quality, and productivity.
Key ResponsibilitiesHydrovac Operations
- Safely operate and transport Hydrovac trucks and equipment to and from job sites.
- Perform hydro excavation activities for utility locating, daylighting, trenching, potholing, and excavation support.
- Conduct pre-trip, post-trip, and daily vehicle and equipment inspections.
- Complete vehicle logbooks, inspection reports, timesheets, and required documentation accurately and on time.
- Maintain Hydrovac equipment in a clean, safe, and operational condition.
- Identify and report equipment deficiencies, hazards, incidents, and unsafe work conditions.
- Ensure all work is completed in compliance with company policies, client requirements, and applicable safety regulations.
- Communicate effectively with supervisors, clients, utility owners, and fellow crew members.
Field & Crew Support
- Assist with site setup, traffic control, excavation support, and general labour activities as required.
- Participate in daily hazard assessments, safety meetings, and toolbox talks.
- Support underground utility, excavation, and construction activities as directed.
- Assist with equipment maintenance and job site cleanup.
- Work collaboratively with field crews to ensure projects are completed safely and efficiently.
Cross-Training & Team Development
- Demonstrate a willingness to learn and perform additional operational and field-based responsibilities.
- Participate in cross-training opportunities to develop skills in other crew functions and equipment operations.
- Support project requirements by assisting in multiple roles when Hydrovac work is not available.
- Contribute to a positive team environment through flexibility, professionalism, and a strong work ethic.
Required Qualifications
- Valid Class 3 or 1 Driver's License
- Clean Driver's Abstract.
- Ability to safely operate Hydrovac equipment and work around underground utilities.
- Strong understanding of safe work practices and hazard recognition.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather and site conditions.
- Strong communication and teamwork skills.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Physically capable of performing demanding field work.
Required Certifications
Candidates must possess and maintain the following valid certifications:
- Confined Space Entry
- Fall Protection
- Ground Disturbance Level II (or equivalent)
- H2S Alive
- Standard First Aid with CPR/AED
- WHMIS
- CSTS (Construction Safety Training System)
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous Hydrovac or Vacuum Truck experience.
- Experience working around underground utilities and infrastructure.
- Experience operating heavy equipment or construction equipment.
- Mechanical aptitude and equipment maintenance experience.
- Utility locating or excavation experience.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 lbs (23 kg).
- Ability to climb, bend, kneel, crouch, and work in confined or uneven terrain.
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
- Ability to work extended hours, weekends, and overtime when required.
- Comfortable working in various weather conditions and construction environments.
