ALPC is excited to be hiring a new member of our team. We offer comprehensive legal support to refugees and immigrants at every stage of the immigration process. We seek a self-motivated and focused individual with legal experience in the field and an earnest desire to learn. Salary is commensurate with experience. A fee split option may be available in the future. Start date is flexible.
Duties
- Prepare Basis of Claim forms and narratives by interviewing clients with the help of interpreters.
- Prepare refugee claims via the IRCC portal.
- Prepare pre- and post-hearing disclosure for Refugee Protection Division (RPD) hearings.
- Conduct pre-hearing interviews to prepare clients to appear before the RPD.
- Represent clients at their RPD, Admissibility, and Judicial Review Hearings (and any other hearings as required).
- Prepare Humanitarian & Compassionate Applications.
- Prepare Pre-Removal Risk Assessment Applications.
- Prepare Memoranda of Argument and Appellant Records for Refugee Appeal Division (RAD) Appeals.
- Prepare Memoranda of Argument and Application Records for Judicial Review Applications at the Federal Court.
- Communicate effectively with clients to explain their rights, options, and the immigration process.
- Stay informed about changes in immigration policies and laws that may affect clients.
Requirements
- Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.
- Admission to practice law in Ontario.
- Proven experience in refugee and immigration law is preferred; we will accept limited experience if the applicant is willing to put in the time to quickly learn the requisite skills to assist with upcoming statutory deadlines.
- Ability to come into the Toronto office for training; more experienced applicants can start working from home almost immediately.
- Legal Aid Ontario General Panel Roster Member preferred.
- Strong research skills and proficiency in using legal research tools.
- Excellent legal drafting abilities with attention to detail.
- Strong negotiation skills and the ability to advocate effectively for clients.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team environment.
- A commitment to providing high-quality legal services with integrity and professionalism.
