About Project Literacy
Project Literacy is a registered charity. They provide literacy support for adults, immigrants, refugees, seniors, families, and children. Now in their 40th year, Project Literacy has been operating continuously since 1986. They are the only literacy focused charity in the Central Okanagan and have a volunteer base of over 200 active volunteers.
Job Description:
The Education Coordinator coordinates several programs taking place throughout the year. This includes,
· The One to One In-School Reading Support Program for students in grades 1-4 (from October to May) Currently operating in 14 elementary schools
· The Summer Reading Program (July and August)
· The Digital Literacy Program for Seniors (September to June)
· The One-to-One Adult Tutoring Program- ongoing
This position involves working extensively with adult volunteers, including conducting volunteer assessment, training, and scheduling.
One to One Reading Program (Primary responsibility):
· Coordinate the program which is currently taking place in 14 elementary schools
· Advise other interested elementary school of the program
· Meet with elementary teachers to determine how many of their students require reading support
· Coordinate volunteer tutor placement in elementary schools
· Train volunteer tutors, and support their tutoring with students
· Provide regular updates and program reports
· Coordinate volunteer appreciation events and gatherings
· This program runs from October to June
Summer Reading Program (Primary Responsibility):
· Teaching children in grades 1 -4 improved reading skills
· Develop summer reading program curriculum, the program runs half days Monday to Thursday throughout July and August
· In collaboration with elementary school teachers, register qualifying students for the Summer Reading Program. The summer reading program is for students in grades 1-4 who are struggling to develop their reading skills. The program supports 36 students over the months of July and August.
· Register students and advise parents of the commitments to the summer program
Digital Literacy Program (Support Position):
· Provide assessments of seniors’ digital literacy needs
· Match seniors with a volunteer tutor
· Monitor tutor/learner match to ensure digital literacy goals are met
· Interview and assessment of volunteer tutors
One to One Adult Tutoring Program (Support Position):
· Interview learners and provide standardized assessment instruments to determine their literacy level
· Interview new volunteers, and conduct criminal record checks and reference reviews
· Match volunteer tutors with learners
· Develop an individualized assessment-based education plan for each learner
· Plan training workshops, prepare training materials and conduct tutor training
· Provide ongoing educational support to tutor-learner pairs as needed
Other Responsibilities:
· Perform general administrative duties facilitating information flow to staff, educators, schools, tutors and learners
· Monitor learning resources and recommend appropriate additions
· Maintain the communication network to appropriate community service providers, and participate in community tables focusing on community literacy and early literacy
· Keep up to date records on learner and tutor intake and activity data and provide programs reports as needed
· Maintain learner and tutor file information and protect confidentiality
· Participate in public awareness and fundraising events held throughout the year
Relation of the position to others in the organization
· Reports directly to Executive Director
· Works closely with other Education Coordinators
· Works cooperatively with the Office Administrator
· Supervises Summer Student
· Bachelor’s degree in education, Social Sciences or equivalent
· Minimum two years’ experience interacting with public elementary schools
· Minimum two years’ experience training and coordinating volunteers
· Experience with literacy assessment and evaluation strategies
· Training and experience in developing lesson and program plans
· Minimum two years’ experience coordinating and leading summer reading programs for children ages 6-10 years
· Ability to work independently and cooperatively with others
· Strong Microsoft product skills (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Outlook)
· Experience with volunteer management software (i.e.: Better Impact)
· Excellent spoken and written English skills
· Strong communication and interpersonal skills
· Good conflict management skills
· Your own transportation is required for this position
· Travel across the Central Okanagan Region is required
· Ability to speak additional languages an asset
Salary: $30 - 32/ hour (depending on experience and qualifications)

Hours: 34 hours per week
A criminal record check for working with vulnerable children is required for this position.
