Role Overview
Active Scale Manufacturing Inc. designs and builds heavy-duty truck scales, platform scales, and industrial weighing systems from our Brantford, ON facility. As a Welder / General Labour, you are the backbone of the production floor — fabricating, assembling, and finishing the structural steel components that go into every scale we ship.
This is a hands-on, shop-floor role that demands both welding skill and a willingness to support all stages of production. You will work closely with the Production Manager and Quality Controller to meet build schedules, maintain quality standards, and uphold a safe, organized workspace.
Key Responsibilities
Fabrication & Welding
- Perform structural welding operations (MIG/FGMAW) on steel scale decks, frames, and sub-assemblies according to engineering drawings and SOPs.
- Cut, fit, grind, and prepare steel components prior to welding using saws, grinders, and plasma cutters.
- Read and interpret technical blueprints, shop drawings, and weld symbols to ensure dimensional accuracy.
- Conduct self-inspections of completed welds and correct deficiencies before handoff to the Quality Controller.
- Operate overhead cranes and material handling equipment to position and move heavy assemblies safely.
General Production Support
- Assist with the assembly, fitting, and bolt-up of structural steel components and scale frames.
- Support painting and coating operations including surface preparation (grinding, blasting).
- Assist with loading and unloading of materials, finished goods, and delivery trucks as required.
- Perform general shop duties: housekeeping, organizing tools and materials, and maintaining a 5S-compliant work area.
- Operate forklifts and other material handling equipment.
Quality & Safety
- Follow all Active Scale standard operating procedures (SOPs) for welding, fabrication, and surface finishing.
- Comply with all OHSA regulations and company health & safety policies at all times.
- Wear and maintain all required personal protective equipment (PPE): welding helmet, gloves, steel-toed boots, hearing protection.
- Immediately report unsafe conditions, near-misses, or equipment deficiencies to the Production Manager.
