JOB PURPOSE:
The CNC Machinist (Milling) operates and programs CNC milling equipment to produce precision tooling components with accuracy and efficiency. This role combines technical machining expertise with problem-solving skills, driving on-time delivery of quality parts and supporting MPC's commitment to manufacturing excellence.
DUTIES &RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Setup, operate, and program CNC milling machines to produce precision components.
- Load cutting tools, fixtures, and workpieces into CNC milling machines using vises, electro-magnets, clamping, pallets, and other work-holding strategies.
- Load and setup automated pallet cells and robotic pallet changers for unattended operation.
- Set machine offsets for workpiece position and tool sizes by utilizing in-machine probing, indicators, and laser measurement systems.
- Read and interpret 2D drawings and G-code for setup, troubleshooting, and adjustments.
- Manage and prioritize work to optimize machine utilization and meet project deadlines.
- Operate manual machining equipment (mill, lathe, surface grinder, saw) for component preparation.
- Design and build fixtures to support efficient CNC milling operations.
- Develop CNC programs using CAM software (Cimatron).
- Select appropriate cutting tools, speeds, feeds, and machining strategies.
- Create and optimize toolpaths for efficient material removal and surface finish.
- Simulate and verify programs before first-run to prevent collisions and errors.
- Revise and optimize existing programs based on cycle time and quality results.
- Apply basic mathematical calculations for offsets, angles, and dimensions.
QUALIFICATIONS:
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma or equivalency certificate.
- Minimum 2 years of experience operating and programming CNC milling machines.
- Self-motivated with ability to work independently and manage competing priorities.
- Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting abilities.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong organizational skills with high standards for cleanliness and workplace organization.
- Proficiency with Windows systems and Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook, Teams).
- Commitment to health & safety, continuous learning, and quality excellence.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Licensed Red Seal Machinist or equivalent post-secondary technical education.
- 5+ years of experience operating and programming CNC milling machines.
- Knowledge of injection molds and mold/die components.
- Experience with high-speed hard milling techniques.
- Proficiency with in-machine probing and laser tool setting systems.
- Experience with electrode machining processes.
- Experience with die-sinker EDM or wire EDM processes.
- Solidworks CAD for measurement and visualization of assemblies/components.
- Cimatron CAM Programming and electrode CAD design.
- Familiarity with Fanuc and/or Heidenhain CNC mill control systems.
- Experience with automated pallet systems and robotic pallet changers.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Ability to stand for extended periods during machine operation.
- Capability to lift up to 50 lbs occasionally.
- Manual dexterity for precision work and fine adjustments.
- Visual acuity to read measurements and inspect parts to tight tolerances.
