Pipelayer Helper Job Description
Job Summary
The pipelayer helper is responsible for supporting water and sewer construction activities by performing a variety of tasks including site preparation, material handling, trench work, and assisting pipe crews. This role requires physical stamina, attention to safety, and the ability to work effectively in a team environment under varying weather conditions.
Key Responsibilities
· Assist pipe crews with installation and repair of water and sewer lines.
· Perform site preparation tasks including clearing debris and setting up equipment.
· Handle and transport construction materials such as pipes, gravel, and tools.
· Excavate and backfill trenches manually or with equipment assistance.
· Operate jumping jacks (wackers), jackhammers, and other construction tools as required.
· Maintain cleanliness and organization of the worksite.
· Follow safety protocols and wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
· Support equipment operators and tradespeople with general labour tasks.
· Report hazards, incidents, or equipment issues to supervisors promptly.
· Perform other duties as assigned to support project completion.
Reporting Responsibilities
· Reports directly to the pipelayer and foreman.
· Effectively communicates field conditions, tool issues, safety hazards, and other concerns
· Reviews and signs off on daily tailgate meeting minutes and weekly toolbox talks using SiteDocs.
· Promptly report any incidents, injuries, near misses, hazards, or unsafe conditions to the Foreman.
· Completes and submits all required incident and near-miss documentation.
Qualifications
· Valid driver’s license
· Experience with SiteDocs or similar reporting tools is an asset.
· The ability to communicate well with others
Physical Demands
· Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
· Frequent standing, walking, bending, twisting, pushing, pulling and climbing on uneven terrain.
· Capability to lift up to 50 lbs and perform physical labor as needed.
Work Environment
· Work is performed outdoors on active construction sites, involving excavation, pipe installation, water and sewer installation, rehabilitation projects, and heavy machinery.
· Extended periods of physical activity during 8–12 hour shifts, with potential for overtime including early mornings, evenings, and weekends as required by project schedules.
· Exposure to dust, noise, vibration, mud, heavy equipment, and varying weather conditions.
· Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) such as hard hats, safety boots, and high-visibility clothing.
