We are seeking an innovative and collaborative Learning Design Consultant (Online Course Development) to help shape engaging, high-quality online learning experiences for today's learners.
The Learning Design Consultant, Online Course Development works with subject matter experts (SMEs) and internal academic partners to design, develop, and build high-quality certificate, diploma, undergraduate, and graduate online courses from initial framework through production.
This role applies established course design standards, templates, accessibility requirements, and responsible AI practices to create clear, learner-centred online learning experiences. The consultant contributes to academic quality, consistency, and launch readiness through strong collaboration, practical learning design support, and careful documentation.
Responsibilities
1. Course framework and curriculum design
- Collaborate in structured design conversations with SMEs to define the course description, syllabus, course learning outcomes, CLO-to-PLO mapping, weekly topics and subtopics, assessment plan, and assessment-to-CLO mapping.
- Support the translation of program expectations, academic standards, and level requirements into coherent course frameworks and learning pathways.
- Review sequencing, scope, workload, learning progression, and academic integrity considerations, and recommend practical adjustments for assigned courses.
- Use approved templates, checklists, and design standards when preparing course frameworks for review and approval.
2. AI-enabled content development and academic quality support
- Use approved AI tools and prompt patterns to assist with drafting learning content, examples, activities, case studies, feedback, and assessment items.
- Work closely with SMEs to verify content accuracy, currency, breadth, depth, and appropriateness for the intended academic level.
- Edit, organize, and refine draft content into learning materials that are clear, instructionally effective, learner-centred, and aligned to course outcomes.
- Apply institutional expectations for responsible AI use, copyright, privacy, bias mitigation, and academic quality control.
- Maintain clear documentation of prompts, SME decisions, review notes, and content changes during development.
3. Online course production and learner experience design
- Configure and build approved content using institutional templates, standards, and supported digital course authoring platforms.
- Apply evidence-informed online learning practices, accessibility requirements, and Universal Design for Learning principles in the presentation of content, activities, interactions, and assessments.
- Develop or coordinate multimedia elements, interactions, knowledge checks, and course assets as assigned to support engagement and academic rigour.
- Prepare complete course packages and assets for LMS implementation and launch readiness.
- Maintain organized files and production notes to support efficient handoff, implementation, and future course updates.
4. Quality review, feedback, and course maintenance
- Conduct design and build quality checks before release using defined rubrics, mapping checks, accessibility checks, and course-readiness criteria.
- Incorporate feedback from SMEs and internal stakeholders during development and after launch to support refinements and revisions.
- Maintain accurate records of design decisions, mappings, review comments, version history, and course assets.
- Support course updates and improvements based on learner feedback, evaluation data, academic requirements, and program needs.
- Share practical observations with the manager or project team when existing templates, processes, or documentation could be improved.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Education, Instructional Design, Learning Design, Educational Technology, Curriculum Studies, or a related field.
- At least two years of recent experience designing and developing online courses in a post-secondary environment or a closely comparable adult-learning setting.
- Demonstrated experience working with SMEs or faculty to move a course from initial outcomes and assessment design through to developed online delivery materials.
- Working knowledge of course and program outcomes alignment, including CLO-to-PLO or equivalent mapping and assessment alignment.
- Hands-on experience with at least one enterprise LMS.
- Knowledge of adult learning, online pedagogy, assessment design, accessibility, and Universal Design for Learning.
- Strong writing, editing, communication, collaboration, and project-coordination skills, with the ability to manage assigned deliverables and timelines across multiple course development tasks.
- Proactive and open attitude toward using AI tools responsibly in content development, review, and quality assurance workflows.
Preferred Qualifications
- Hands-on experience with Articulate 360 or similar course authoring tools.
- Experience supporting undergraduate, graduate, certificate, diploma, or continuing education course development.
- Experience in a Canadian university or college environment, especially in online or distance education.
- Experience applying accessibility practices, coordinating multimedia assets, and using established course templates.

Hours of Work
This is a full-time permanent position (35 hours per week) under regular business hours. The position is based in Fredericton, NB, with the option to work remotely from anywhere in New Brunswick and attend in-person meetings as required. The ideal candidate resides in New Brunswick or is willing to relocate.
