Job Description:
The Fisheries Technician will be responsible for supporting Shuswap Band’s Fisheries Team with the implementation of the Dutch Creek Bull Trout fish enumeration fence, water temperature logger downloads, surface water quality sampling, and other projects as directed by the Sr. Fisheries Biologist and Territorial Stewardship Director. The Fisheries Technician will also assist with data compilation and reporting requirements for funding agreement deliverables.
Responsibilities:
- Assist with implementing Shuswap Band’s fisheries field programs. Programs may include water temperature monitoring and habitat assessment in the upper Columbia River watershed; fish abundance and distribution assessments and sampling fish at a fish fence; tracking fish movement using PIT and radio telemetry methods; collecting genetics samples; documenting fish health and other biological parameters; measuring water quality in regional rivers and creeks, and other projects as required.
- Collaborate on field studies and monitoring programs with Shuswap Band’s Fisheries Biologist & Technician, Guardians and external project partners.
- Collect and record accurate, clear and concise field data and notes under varied environmental conditions including inclement weather.
- Organize, maintain, and calibrate field equipment. This may include repairing fish nets and other sampling gear, coordinating boat and vehicle maintenance, ensuring provincial decontamination procedures are followed (i.e., Whirling Disease), calibration of water quality meters and other electronic devices used in the field.
- Strong personal commitment to workplace safety, including the safe operation of boats, off-highway vehicles, 4x4 vehicles used to access remote sampling locations.
- Participate in productive knowledge-sharing and relationship building sessions within Shuswap Band and with external stakeholders on fisheries projects and initiatives.
Qualifications:
- Post secondary degree or technical diploma in Ecology, Biology, Environmental Sciences, Fish & Wildlife Management, or a related program, and a minimum of 2 years of work experience in related fields.
- Experience working and traveling safely in remote areas, such as lakes, rivers and creeks in mountainous environments.
- Experience working with and handling various fish species in the upper Columbia River watershed.
- Proficient in using a variety of computer applications and software, including MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint), Survey123, Dropbox.
- Demonstrated organizational skills and attention to detail when recording accurate field notes, measurements, computer data entry, and/or technical reporting.
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
- Ability to work extended hours, sometimes at odd hours and often in adverse weather conditions, when necessary to complete project requirements.
- Training certificates in related technical areas (e.g., First Aid Level 1, Swiftwater Rescue Technician, Backpack Electrofishing Crew Supervisor).
- Previous experience working with a First Nation organization is considered a strong asset.
- Must have a valid Class 5 Driver’s License.
- Must be physically fit and able to carry heavy equipment (at least 50 pounds) and supplies in challenging terrain.
