The Team
The Special Investigations Unit is an established, collaborative group, working together to protect the integrity of Ministry health programs by investigating suspected fraud, incentives, and other regulatory and criminal violations. This team - which includes a Senior Director, eight Senior Investigators, and three Major Case File Specialists - partners closely with auditors, police, justice authorities, and medical professionals to gather evidence that supports regulatory and criminal actions. The team values diverse perspectives, mutual respect, and inclusive problem solving, and is driven by a shared commitment to safeguarding the health care system for all British Columbians.
The Role
In this role, the Special Investigator leads or supports complex investigations into serious criminal or regulatory offenses, ensuring that all work aligns with legislation, policy, and professional standards. Their efforts help protect public resources and strengthen the safety of the health care system by uncovering wrongdoing and supporting actions that remove bad actors. Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements
- Diploma in administrative law, investigation, enforcement, criminology, or a related field and 3 years *related experience; OR
- An equivalent combination of education and related experience may be considered.
*Related experience must include:
- Experience in investigative techniques, with a policing and/or commercial crime background.
- Experience with the Major Case File Management process.
- Experience in leading and organizing search warrants, sometimes involving multiple agencies.
- Experience completing court briefs, Search Warrants and Production Orders and securing evidence in accordance with the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
- Experience with covert operations and surveillance methods.
Provisos:
- Valid B.C. driver’s licence or equivalent with the ability to obtain a B.C. Drivers license.
- Satisfactory background and security screening to qualify as a Special Provincial Constable.
Preference may be given to applicants with the following:
- 4 or more years of experience in investigative techniques, with a policing and/or commercial crime background.
- 4 or more years of experience with the Major Case File Management process.
- 4 or more years of experience in setting up and managing multi-agency task forces.
- 4 or more years of experience in leading and organizing search warrants, sometimes involving multiple agencies.
- Applicants who identify as Indigenous (First Nations, Métis, or Inuit).
Willingness Statements:
- Required to work in locations that may pose a variety of risks/hazards.
- May be required to travel alone, late at night in remote areas of the province, under a variety of weather conditions.
- Required to work weekends and evenings, on a flexible schedule.
