We are looking for skilled and culturally sensitive professionals who are committed to making a meaningful impact in Northern communities. As independent, community-focused units, Local Housing Organizations (LHOs) operate within the framework of the Inuit Societal Values and strive to provide most of the day-to-day services associated with program delivery to individuals and families. The 25 LHOs partner with the Nunavut Housing Corporation, to deliver housing programs and manage assets.
The Nunavut Housing Corporation (NHC) is an agency of the Government of Nunavut with a mandate to create, co-ordinate, and administer housing programs to provide fair access to a range of affordable housing options to families and individuals in Nunavut. NHC has recently launched The Nunavut 3000 Strategy, (www.igluliuqatigiingniq.ca) which is a collaboration between the government and its partners to deliver 3,000 new units across the housing continuum by 2030.
Local Housing Organizations, in partnership with the NHC, are looking for multiple full-time Red Seal Tradespersons for our residential maintenance & housing operations based in various communities in Nunavut, Canada.
Reporting to local housing maintenance leadership, you will play a key role in supporting residential housing operations across northern communities. This hands-on position is responsible for performing maintenance, repairs, renovations, inspections, and trade-specific service work to ensure safe, functional, and well-maintained housing for residents.
More specifically, your responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Installing, repairing, and maintaining residential plumbing systems, fixtures, and water distribution equipment
- Servicing boilers, furnaces, hot water tanks, oil-burning systems, and auxiliary heating equipment
- Troubleshooting plumbing, heating, drainage, water, and mechanical systems
- Performing residential electrical maintenance, repairs, and system troubleshooting
- Inspecting electrical systems and ensuring compliance with applicable codes and standards
- Installing windows, doors, stairs, decks, and other structural components
- Completing interior renovation work including drywall, flooring, painting, staining, and minor structural repairs
- Conducting mold remediation, restoration, and property repair work as required
- Performing preventative maintenance and housing inspections
- Reading and interpreting blueprints, schematics, and technical drawings
- Maintaining accurate maintenance, inspection, and repair records
- Collaborating with maintenance personnel and other trades while adhering to workplace safety requirements
To qualify, you will need a Red Seal Journeyperson Certification in Plumbing, Carpentry, Construction & Maintenance Electrician (309A equivalent), or Oil Burner Mechanic (OBM), along with a valid Canadian driver's licence. Previous experience in residential maintenance, repairs, or renovations will also be essential.
Additionally, the following skills and background will be highly valued:
- Experience working in northern, remote, Inuit, or Indigenous communities
- Strong troubleshooting, diagnostic, and problem-solving abilities
- Experience servicing residential plumbing, heating, electrical, or building systems
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical drawings
- Mechanical aptitude and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision
- Knowledge of Nunavut Inuit Societal Values (ISV)
