The Opportunity
We are seeking a Senior Manager, Research Operations & Data Architecture to build and scale its research function across Clinical Research and Data Architecture.
This is a foundational leadership role responsible for establishing the operating model, governance structures, and data infrastructure required to support clinical research, SR&ED initiatives, and future innovation and analytics capabilities.
The role is designed to evolve into Director, Research Operations & Data Strategy as the function scales in scope, team size, and impact.
This position is ideal for a leader who is equally comfortable building from the ground up and shaping long-term strategy, with the opportunity to grow into full platform leadership.
Key Responsibilities
Core Leadership & Function Build
- Build and lead the Research function as a scalable capability across Clinical Research and Data Architecture
- Establish the operating model, standards, workflows, and governance structures
- Translate strategic vision into structured and executable plans aligned to Beam’s growth priorities
Research Portfolio & Program Management
- Own end-to-end portfolio management including intake, prioritization, resourcing, timelines, and risk management
- Implement structured project management frameworks, reporting cadence, and performance tracking
- Oversee SR&ED identification, documentation, and submission support in partnership with finance and external advisors
Data Strategy & Architecture
- Define and operationalize the research data strategy, including data pipelines, reporting, and governance
- Establish scalable, high-quality data infrastructure to support clinical research and analytics
- Enable reproducible analytics, standardized outputs, and data-driven decision-making
- Support future readiness for advanced analytics, AI, and real-world evidence initiatives
Team Leadership & Capability Building
- Lead, coach, and develop Clinical Research and Data Architecture team members
- Support hiring, onboarding, and scaling of the research function
- Build internal capability across project management, research operations, and analytics
- Establish clear roles, expectations, and performance standards
Governance, Quality & Compliance
- Implement consistent processes across study coordination, documentation, and quality assurance
- Ensure compliance with clinical research standards and SR&ED requirements
- Drive audit readiness, documentation integrity, and operational consistency
- Support the establishment of research governance structures (e.g., Steering Committee)
Stakeholder Partnership & Growth
- Partner with physicians and operational leaders to identify and prioritize research initiatives
- Act as a central coordination point across clinical, operational, financial, and research stakeholders
- Support expansion of the research portfolio in a structured and sustainable way
- Contribute to the long-term evolution of Beam’s research and innovation platform
Director Progression (Defined Pathway)
This role is expected to progress to Director, Research Operations & Data Strategy based on demonstrated outcomes, including:
- Successful build-out of research operating model and workflows
- Implementation of structured portfolio management and reporting systems
- Established data architecture and analytics capabilities
- Growth and leadership of a multidisciplinary team
- Operational governance structures (e.g., Steering Committee) in place
- Expansion of research portfolio, SR&ED activity, and physician engagement
Qualifications & Experience
Required
- 7–10+ years of experience in healthcare operations, research operations, program management, or a related field
- Demonstrated experience managing complex, cross-functional programs or portfolios
- Experience building or scaling functions, processes, or teams
- Strong leadership and stakeholder management capabilities
- Excellent organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills
Qualifications & Experience
Required
- 10+ years leading complex healthcare, research, or data-driven functions
- Proven experience building and scaling programs, platforms, or new capabilities
- Strong track record of operating at both strategic and execution levels
- Experience leading cross-functional teams and influencing senior stakeholders
- Exceptional ability to bring structure to ambiguity and drive outcomes
Preferred / Assets
- Experience in clinical research or healthcare environments
- Exposure to data architecture, analytics, or data-driven environments
- Experience with SR&ED programs, funding, or documentation frameworks
- PMP or equivalent project/program management experience
- Interest or exposure to innovation, analytics, or healthcare transformation initiatives
Work Schedule & Environment
- Schedule: Full-time, Monday to Friday
- Location: Calgary (in-person with some flexibility)
- Travel: Occasional travel between clinic sites
