BHE Canada is seeking a Summer Student to support confirmations and mid- and back-office activities for the energy trading team, AlbertaEx. This role provides an exciting opportunity to join a growing commercial operation and gain exposure to physical and financial energy transactions, trade lifecycle processes, and the controls that support an effective energy marketing business. Working closely with the Finance and Energy Trading teams, you will assist with transaction confirmations, trade data review, settlements support, reconciliations, and documentation while contributing to the ongoing development of BHE Canada’s energy trading operations and business strategy.
SUMMARY
As a summer student, your primary responsibility will be to support the confirmation of physical and financial energy trade transactions and provide day-to-day support to the trading team’s mid- and back-office functions. This role helps ensure confirmations are prepared, tracked, and maintained accurately on a timely basis in accordance with internal procedures, risk controls, records management requirements, and audit expectations. You will assist with reviewing transaction details, monitoring supporting documentation, and supporting settlements, reconciliations, and issue resolution across Alberta and U.S. power markets. This is an excellent opportunity for someone with strong attention to detail, sound judgment, and an interest in energy marketing operations, trade support, and process improvement.
Role Attributes:
- Trade Confirmation Administration: Assist with preparing, issuing, tracking, and maintaining physical and financial trade confirmations to support timely and accurate confirmation of transactions with counterparties
- Mid- and Back-Office Support: Support core trade operations processes, including trade data validation, records maintenance, settlements support, and reconciliation activities
- Counterparty and Stakeholder Coordination: Work with traders, finance, counterparties, and other internal and external stakeholders to resolve discrepancies and support accurate transaction processing
- Process and Control Discipline: Follow established procedures, documentation standards, and internal controls to support compliance, audit readiness, and risk mitigation
- Continuous Improvement Mindset: Contribute to process improvements, reporting support, and the ongoing development of trade support tools and workflows
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
- Prepare, review, match, and track physical and financial trade confirmations to support timely and accurate confirmation of transactions
- Assist with validating trade data, including counterparties, volumes, pricing, and other transaction details, to help ensure completeness and accuracy of records
- Support settlements, billings, and reconciliations for trading activities, including helping investigate, escalate, and resolve discrepancies
- Maintain organized confirmation and supporting documentation in accordance with records management practices, internal procedures, and audit requirements
- Coordinate with traders, finance, and counterparties to follow up on outstanding confirmations and exceptions
- Assist with reporting, process documentation, and other administrative tasks that support mid- and back-office trade operations
- Help identify process gaps, data issues, or operational risks and escalate items appropriately
- Compliance and Additional Functions:
- Support the maintenance and improvement of trade support tools, templates, desk procedures, and process documentation
- Assist with communication and follow-up with counterparties and internal stakeholders to support timely completion of trade support activities
- Provide general reporting, filing, and administrative support for confirmations and other mid- and back-office functions
Qualifications:
- Minimum two (2) years of post-secondary education in Business, Finance, Accounting, Economics, or a related discipline
- Interest in energy markets, energy marketing, trade operations, confirmations, settlements, or accounting support functions
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills, with demonstrated attention to detail
- Ability to work accurately with transaction data, documentation, and multiple competing priorities in a fast-paced environment
- Strong computer skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Office; experience with data analysis or business systems is an asset
- Strong communication skills, initiative, and the ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with a broader team
