Camrose Women’s Shelter Society operates a 22-bed facility offering a safe haven for women who have experienced domestic violence, abuse, or other forms of trauma. Our goal is to provide a supportive environment for the victims of Family Violence and abuse where women and children can begin the difficult journey of moving forward. This can include advocating to secure financial supports, finding suitable housing, developing safety plans, or meeting other goals. Our shelter works from a Trauma Informed Lens. What we are looking for in a Casual Crisis Intervention Worker:
A compassionate and understanding candidate with professional values and boundaries, with a firm understanding and knowledge of the impacts of family violence and homelessness on women and children. Candidates will use their skills to assess crisis calls, provide supportive listening, provide referrals and advocate with agencies. Crisis Intervention Workers are the front-line workers of the shelter and are responsible for the daily running of the house including meal preparation, house cleaning, laundry and light maintenance.
The shelter is a fast-paced environment and requires you to be professional, have critical thinking skills , remain non-judgmental and empathetic with clients, and share information appropriately to facilitate client personal growth.
What you will bring to the position:
Preference will be given to candidates with a degree or diploma in a Human Services related discipline, and/or related experience working in a shelter or crisis-oriented field.
Previous work experience of 1 year minimum, with clients who are victims of family violence or abuse, families in crisis, women’s programs, or residential programs are an asset.
Knowledge or experience in family violence and abuse, reasons behind homelessness, addictions, mental illness, Indigenous culture and practice and training in working from a Trauma Informed lens is also an asset.
Ability to provide one-on-one supportive listening, critical thinking and support.
Current First Aid with CPR, Criminal Record Check, and Children’s Services Intervention Record Check are required to start.
Ability to do shift work the ability to navigate stairs, sweep/mop/vacuum, change beds, and lift up to 50 pounds is a must.
Casual Employee Hours of Work and Benefits
· Hours of work: This position requires shift work up to 40 hours per week including weekends and overnight awake shifts. Hours per week vary and all candidates must be available for a variety of shifts.
The shelter is open 24/7 and weekend availability is a requirement.
Morning – 6:00 am to 4:00 pm
Evening: 12:00 pm to 10:00 pm
Night: 9:00 pm to 7:00 am
The shelter will offer training courses to increase your skill base for working in this environment.
Our policies and procedures are structured in a way which will provide guidance for working in this challenging environment. Dealing with every situation individually and with emotional intelligence is integral to providing the best possible support.
· Two therapists are available to casual employees free of charge
- One complementary meal per shift.
-Casual dress but neat, tidy and safe to work in, including for lifting and cleaning.
The Shelter follows current Alberta Health Services Outbreak prevention measurements and safety protocols and provides appropriate and applicable PPE to all employees.
This a Union position under CUPE Local 1425 and Union dues are collected from all members. All union members have an agreed upon Collective Agreement to guide most labour relations. Any other items are covered under our Operational Policies and Procedures, Human Resources Policies and Procedures or our Health and Safety Management System Policies and Procedures.
