The Community Safety & Enforcement Officer I (CSEO I) promotes the safety, security, and well-being of Cheam First Nation through patrols, incident response, enforcement, and community engagement. Working within a culturally informed and community-based framework, the CSEO I supports compliance with Cheam First Nation laws and regulations, responds to public safety concerns, and builds positive relationships with community members, partner agencies, and emergency responders.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Conduct routine foot and vehicle patrols throughout Cheam First Nation lands and facilities to promote safety, deter unlawful activity, and identify community concerns.
- Monitor public spaces, residential areas, community infrastructure, and designated risk areas.
- Respond to non-emergency incidents, public safety concerns, and individuals in crisis, providing support until appropriate services arrive.
- Enforce applicable Cheam First Nation laws, regulations, policies, and Land Code provisions within the scope of authority.
- Conduct preliminary investigations, gather information, preserve evidence, and prepare incident reports.
- Build positive relationships with community members through respectful, culturally informed, and trauma-informed interactions.
- Conduct welfare checks and connect individuals with appropriate community, health, or social services when required.
- Promote community safety, crime prevention, and public awareness initiatives.
- Work collaboratively with Cheam First Nation departments, leadership, emergency responders, police, and external agencies.
- Maintain accurate records, reports, and documentation related to patrol, enforcement, and community safety activities.
- Maintain knowledge of applicable laws, policies, procedures, and enforcement authorities.
- Participate in required training and professional development.
- Uphold the values, vision, and objectives of Cheam First Nation.
- Provide shift leadership when assigned and perform other related duties as required.
Required Qualifications
- Grade 12 diploma or equivalent.
- Basic Security Training
- Valid Class 5 BC Driver's License with a satisfactory driver's abstract.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a satisfactory Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Check.
- Valid Occupational First Aid Level 1 certification, or willingness to obtain within a specified timeframe.
- Basic computer proficiency, including experience using email, Microsoft Office applications, and electronic reporting systems.
- Ability to work rotating shifts, including days, evenings, nights, weekends, and statutory holidays.
- Physically capable of conducting foot patrols, standing for extended periods, and responding to emergency situations.
- Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment when handling sensitive information.
- Knowledge of, or willingness to learn, Cheam First Nation culture, governance, community values, and community safety practices.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in Community Safety, Security, Indigenous Policing, Bylaw Enforcement, Corrections, Military, Emergency Management, Fire Service, or a related field.
- Experience working with Indigenous communities and applying culturally informed approaches to community safety.
- Training or certification in one or more of the following:
- Crisis Intervention (NVCI)
- De-escalation Techniques
- Trauma-Informed Practice
- Use of Force
- OC Spray and Baton
- Naloxone Administration
- Mental Health First Aid
- Indigenous Cultural Safety
