Alvarez CPA Inc. is an established public accounting firm located in Gibsons, BC. We work with a diverse group of businesses and individuals.
As a smaller firm, our team members have the opportunity to be involved in client files from start to finish, work directly with clients, and develop a broad range of accounting and tax experience. We are a technology-focused, cloud-based practice and value strong client relationships, practical advice, teamwork, and finding better ways to get the work done.
We are looking for an Experienced Public Practice Staff Accountant to join our team. This position would be a great fit for someone with a few years of public practice experience who is comfortable preparing compilation engagements, T5’s, T2 and T1 tax returns and is ready to take bigger role in their client files.
A CPA designation is not required. We are more interested in practical public practice experience, strong technical skills, and the ability to prepare quality files using CASEWARE and TAX CYCLE with appropriate support and review.
What You’ll Do
In this role, you will work on a variety of owner-managed private company files and will be responsible for work including:
- Preparing compilation engagements from initial working papers through to draft financial statements;
- Preparing corporate year-end working paper files and adjusting journal entries;
- Preparing T2 corporate income tax returns and related schedules;
- Preparing personal income tax returns and other tax filings, depending on experience;
- Preparing financial statements and supporting schedules;
- Communicating directly with clients to obtain information, answer questions, and resolve outstanding items;
- Assisting with CRA correspondence and client tax matters;
- Maintaining organized, well-documented client files;
- Working with our bookkeeping team to resolve accounting and year-end issues;
- Managing assigned files and deadlines with support from the firm’s CPA Staff; and
- Contributing ideas to improve our internal processes and use of technology.
What We’re Looking For
You may be a great fit if you have:
- 2+ years of Canadian public practice accounting experience;
- Hands-on experience preparing compilation engagements for owner-managed businesses using Caseware / Caseview;
- Experience preparing T2 corporate tax returns;
- A good understanding of Canadian accounting and income tax fundamentals;
- A focus on quality and efficiency. That is, a strong attention to detail and the ability to timely communicate any file issues to the partner or manager on the file;
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple client files and deadlines;
- Clear written and verbal communication skills;
- Confidence communicating directly with clients;
- The ability to work both independently and as part of a small team; and
- A practical, problem-solving approach to client service.
Candidates who are working toward their CPA designation are welcome to apply, but we will also consider experienced public practice accountants who are not pursuing a designation.
Must have experience with CaseWare/CaseView and Tax Cycle (or similar tax preparation software)
Experience in Xero, QuickBooks Online and Microsoft Office would be an asset.
Why Join Alvarez CPA?
Working in a smaller firm is different from working in a large public practice environment.
You won’t be limited to one small part of an engagement. You’ll have the opportunity to understand the client’s business, work through the complete year-end process, communicate directly with clients, and see how the accounting and tax work fits together.
At Alvarez CPA, you can expect:
- A collaborative team where your contribution matters;
- Exposure to a wide variety of businesses and industries;
- The opportunity to manage files from beginning to completion;
- Direct interaction with clients and the firm’s CPAs;
- A modern, cloud-based accounting environment;
- Opportunities to expand your technical knowledge and client responsibilities; and
- A workplace that values quality work, efficiency, communication, and maintaining strong long-term client relationships.
We are looking for someone who wants to become an important part of a small firm—not simply another person processing files.
About You
You enjoy public practice but prefer an environment where you can know your clients and coworkers.
You’re comfortable working independently, but you also know when to ask a question. You take ownership of your files, follow up on missing information, meet deadlines, and care about producing work you are comfortable putting your name behind.
Most importantly, you are looking for a role where your existing public practice experience will be valued and where you can continue to grow professionally.
Apply
If this sounds like the type of public practice role you are looking for, we would like to hear from you.
Please submit your resume and a short cover letter outlining your public practice experience, including your experience preparing compilation engagements and corporate tax returns.
