Position Overview
As a Journeyman Heavy Equipment Technician specializing in power generation systems, you will be responsible for diagnosing, maintaining, repairing, commissioning, and supporting a wide range of diesel and natural gas generator systems.
You will work directly with customers while representing Gentech's commitment to professionalism, technical excellence, and exceptional service.
This is a field-based position requiring strong mechanical aptitude, electrical troubleshooting skills, sound judgment, and the ability to work independently.
Key Responsibilities
- Diagnose, troubleshoot, maintain, and repair diesel and natural gas generator systems.
- Perform preventative maintenance in accordance with CSA C282 standards and manufacturer recommendations.
- Troubleshoot complex electrical, mechanical, fuel, cooling, exhaust, and control system failures.
- Perform major engine repairs, component replacements, and complete engine overhauls.
- Conduct load bank testing, commissioning, and system performance verification.
- Diagnose and repair transfer switches, generator controls, and associated emergency power equipment.
- Read and interpret technical manuals, wiring diagrams, schematics, blueprints, and service documentation.
- Complete detailed service reports and maintenance records.
- Respond to emergency service calls as part of an on-call rotation.
- Communicate professionally with customers, facility managers, contractors, and building operators.
- Mentor apprentices and junior technicians when required.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and professional service vehicle and work environment.
- Participate in ongoing technical and manufacturer training programs.
- Perform all work safely while adhering to company policies, industry regulations, and best practices.
Required Qualifications
- Journeyman Heavy Equipment Technician (Off-Road Certification Required).
- Strong diesel engine diagnostic and repair experience.
- Proven electrical troubleshooting and fault-finding abilities.
- Experience using OEM diagnostic software and testing equipment.
- Ability to work independently and manage field service assignments with minimal supervision.
- Valid Class 5 Driver's Licence with a clean driver's abstract.
- Legally eligible to work in Canada.
- Strong communication and customer service skills.
- Computer proficiency including Microsoft Office and digital service reporting systems.
- Own professional-grade toolbox and hand tools.
- Willingness to participate in an on-call rotation and occasional overtime requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
Candidates with any of the following will receive strong consideration:
- Dual-ticket certification (Industrial Electrician, Power Systems Electrician, Millwright, Automotive Service Technician, or related trade).
- Experience with commercial and industrial power generation systems.
- Knowledge of CSA C282 requirements.
- Generator commissioning experience.
- Experience with automatic transfer switches (ATS), switchgear, and paralleling systems.
- Experience supporting mission-critical standby power systems.
- Load bank testing and performance verification experience.
Preferred Generator Experience
