Join an Established and Supportive Doula Team
Driftwood Doula is seeking compassionate, experienced, and professional Postpartum Doulas to join our growing team. This is an excellent opportunity for both certified doulas and individuals actively pursuing certification who are looking to gain mentorship, hands-on experience, and support from an established and experienced doula team.
We are committed to providing evidence-based, non-judgmental, family-centered support during the postpartum period. Our doulas work closely with families to provide practical assistance, education, emotional support, and newborn care while respecting each family's unique values, preferences, and goals.
What Does a Postpartum Doula Do?
A postpartum doula provides non-medical support to families during the weeks and months following birth. Our role is to nurture, educate, support, and empower parents as they adjust to life with a new baby.
What We Do:
- Provide newborn care support, including feeding assistance, diapering, bathing, soothing, and sleep support
- Support recovery following vaginal or cesarean birth
- Offer emotional support, reassurance, and birth debriefing
- Provide evidence-based education regarding infant care, feeding, sleep, and postpartum recovery
- Assist families in creating routines and building confidence in their parenting journey
- Accompany clients to appointments when requested
- Assist with light household tasks that support the family's well-being
- Prepare simple meals and snacks
- Support older siblings' adjustment to a new baby
- Provide referrals and resource recommendations when appropriate
What We Do Not Do:
- Diagnose or treat medical conditions
- Perform clinical assessments
- Provide medical advice
- Administer medications
- Replace medical, nursing, mental health, or lactation professionals
Responsibilities:
Infant Care
- Feeding support (breastfeeding, bottle feeding, formula feeding)
- Diapering and bathing
- Sleep support and education
- Babywearing and infant soothing
- Taking baby for walks and supporting developmental activities
Parent & Family Support
- Supporting physical recovery after birth
- Providing emotional support and reassurance
- Helping parents process their birth experience
- Supporting partner involvement and family adjustment
- Allowing time for parents to rest, shower, or attend to personal needs
Household Support
- Folding laundry
- Dishes
- Tidying and organization
- Sweeping and light cleaning
- Sorting clothes and toys
- Taking out garbage, recycling, and compost
Meal Support
- Meal preparation
- Snack preparation
- Meal planning
- Grocery pickup and basic errands
Education & Resource Support
- Researching parenting-related topics
- Providing recommendations for community resources and providers
- Offering education regarding feeding options and infant sleep
- Sharing evidence-based information while respecting client choice
Qualifications & Requirements Required
- Extensive experience working with newborns and postpartum families
- Training through a recognized doula organization such as DONA, Doula Training Canada, CAPPA, or another widely recognized program
- Current CPR-C certification (adult, child, and infant CPR)
- Criminal Record Check (CRC) and Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC)
- Valid driver's license and reliable vehicle
- Residence within Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM)
- Excellent communication, listening, and interpersonal skills
- Ability to remain calm, organized, and supportive in dynamic family environments
- Commitment to professionalism, confidentiality, and ethical practice
- Sensitivity to diverse cultures, family structures, and parenting approaches
Certification Pathway
Applicants who have not yet completed a recognized postpartum doula training program may be considered if they are actively enrolled in a recognized certification program.
Successful candidates may work in a certifying or apprenticeship capacity under Driftwood Doula for a maximum of three months while completing required training. Certification must be completed within the first three months of engagement.
Please note that all training and certification costs are the responsibility of the contractor.
Schedule Requirements
This role requires flexibility and availability for a variety of shifts, including:
- Daytime shifts
- Evening shifts
- Overnight shifts
- Weekends
- Holidays as required
Independent Contractor Information
This is an independent contractor position and not an employee role.
Contractors are responsible for:
- Maintaining required certifications
- Training and professional development costs
- Criminal Record and Vulnerable Sector Check costs
- Transportation and travel expenses
- Equipment and supplies required to perform services
- Personal tax obligations and business expenses
