The department of Donor Relations is a relationship-driven and collaborative team that helps enable UA’s mission by providing high-quality, donor-centered support and tools to all of our stakeholders across the University in the areas of donor stewardship and donor support through events, reporting, recognition and communication activities that foster long-term donor relationships with the work at McMaster.

Job Summary

As a key member of the Donor Relations team, the Associate Director, Donor Relations supports the strategic development and evaluation of McMaster’s stewardship portfolio and provides direction to ensure effective donor relations and stewardship activities. Reporting to the Director, Donor Relations, this role serves as a central contact for advancement staff across University Advancement and within faculties and units. The Associate Director collaborates with Development and Advancement Operations teams to oversee gift acceptance and acknowledgement, donor recognition, donor communications, and the design, implementation, and evaluation of donor relations programs.

Key Responsibilities

Develop, implement, and evaluate donor stewardship, recognition, and engagement strategies across all donor levels (annual, major, principal, planned giving ), recommending system improvements.

Serve as a strategic partner with Development Team colleagues, offering expertise, guidance, and resources to build comprehensive and coordinated stewardship & engagement plans of transformational and major gift donors.

Manage all stewardship around student awards, including reporting and student thank you letters.

Support gift documentation development, acting as signatory when the Director is away.

Data management of stewardship actions and activities in CRM (Advance), with an eye for process improvement.

Provide strategic operational and administrative leadership to support departmental goals and initiatives.

Advise the Director, UA leadership, fundraisers, and campus partners on strategies that enhance departmental effectiveness and efficiency.

Drive a donor centric culture that promotes “exceptional” stewardship and creates integral touch points and lead the expansion of the established program.

Work in collaboration with other teams on donor strategies to maximize donor engagement and execute creative and strategic programming.

Drive ongoing efforts to leverage events organized within the university as opportunities for donor engagement and recognition.

Participate in and occasionally lead University Advancement project teams.

Management of multiple team members overseeing their performance, goals, professional development and coaching.

Dotted line reporting structure with stewardship team embedded within the faculties, providing guidance, expertise and oversight into how their work fits into the holistic donor stewardship strategic plan

Role Requirements

Minimum of five to seven years’ experience advancing towards a management level, at least two years of which are at a management level;

Proven track record in a not-for-profit environment or in the “for-profit” sector specializing in superior customer experience and service

Proven track record as a skilled leader and manager

Ability to think at a high level about the University and Advancement team priorities

Ability to work within a senior management team

Ability to think strategically and work proactively, managing competing priorities
Experience working with a CRM is an asset
Excellent donor and volunteer relations skills, with a keen sense of diplomacy
Collaborative mindset, strives to work effectively with cross-functional teams and understands the benefits
Strong interpersonal skills, a superior ability to build and foster solid relationships, effectively manage complex protocols and expectations
Ability to rise to new challenges and find creative solutions – resourceful and tenacious
Strong presence, grit, poise and persuasiveness
