Hostmost Marine Services is a leading marine communications and navigation service provider, with depots and service teams in Canada, China, Hong Kong, the Philippines, Vietnam, and Singapore.
To better support our customers in Canada and the Americas, we are expanding our technical service coverage in Ontario and the Great Lakes region. We are looking for a highly capable and client-focused Senior Marine Electronics Service Technician to support vessels calling Canadian and Great Lakes ports.
This is a field-based / on-the-road role supporting vessels, ports, shipyards, and customer sites across Ontario and the Great Lakes region. Candidates based in Hamilton, the Greater Toronto Area, Niagara, or Southwestern Ontario are encouraged to apply.
POSITION SUMMARY
The Senior Marine Electronics Service Technician will provide troubleshooting, repair, installation, commissioning, inspection, and technical support for shipboard radio, navigation, communication, and bridge electronics equipment.
This role is suited for an experienced technician who can work independently, communicate professionally with customers and vessel crew, prepare accurate service reports, and represent Hostmost’s technical team in the Ontario / Great Lakes region.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Service, troubleshoot, install, and commission marine communication and navigation equipment onboard vessels and at customer sites.
- Support systems including radar, ECDIS, gyrocompass, autopilot, GMDSS, VHF/MF/HF radio, AIS, BNWAS, VDR, speed log, satcom, and related bridge electronics.
- Diagnose electrical, electronic, cabling, interface, network, and communication issues.
- Read and follow OEM manuals, wiring diagrams, service bulletins, and internal technical procedures.
- Prepare detailed service reports, including photos, findings, recommendations, parts used, and follow-up requirements.
- Communicate clearly with customers, vessel crew, service coordinators, sales team, and internal technical teams.
- Provide technical support to customers and internal staff.
- Assist with planning service attendances, technical inspections, customer visits, and retrofit projects.
- Identify service opportunities, customer needs, and potential business leads in the assigned region.
- Collect technical and commercial information required for quoting, invoicing, and follow-up.
- Assist with system design, retrofit planning, and supervision of installations where required.
- Support training and mentoring of junior or trainee technicians where appropriate.
- Maintain tools, test equipment, safety gear, and service documentation.
- Follow all company safety procedures, vessel safety requirements, and customer site rules.
- Travel as required to support customers within Ontario, the Great Lakes region, and other locations when needed.
REQUIREMENTS
- Proven service experience with marine electronics, shipboard radio/navigation systems, electrical instrumentation, automation, electronics, radio communications, low-voltage systems, or a related technical field.
- Previous experience with shipboard radio equipment or navigation systems.
- Strong troubleshooting ability with electrical and electronic systems.
- Ability to read wiring diagrams, technical manuals, and service instructions.
- Comfortable using diagnostic tools and test equipment such as multimeters and other electrical/electronic test instruments.
- Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple service cases or projects at the same time.
- Ability to communicate clearly and professionally with customers, vessel crew, and co-workers.
- Strong computer literacy, including MS Office, Outlook, and service-reporting systems.
- Good English communication skills, both oral and written.
- Flexibility to work outside normal office hours when vessel schedules or emergency service requirements demand it.
- Valid driver’s licence and ability to travel to ports, shipyards, vessels, and customer sites.
- Must be legally authorized to work in Canada.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience with marine electronics brands such as Furuno, JRC, YDK/Yokogawa, Raymarine, Sperry, Anschütz, Koden, Skipper, Sailor, Jotron, or similar systems.
- Qualification or experience performing GMDSS radio surveys.
- Qualification or experience performing VDR Annual Performance Tests.
- Experience with NMEA, serial communication, Ethernet, Modbus, CAN bus, or other equipment interface protocols.
- Experience working onboard commercial vessels, in shipyards, or in industrial/marine environments.
- Ability to support planned service, emergency troubleshooting, retrofit projects, and commissioning work.
- Ability to mentor junior technicians is an asset.
CANDIDATE PROFILE
We are looking for someone who is reliable, organized, professional, and strong in troubleshooting. The successful candidate should be comfortable working independently in the field while keeping the internal team updated. Strong documentation, communication, and follow-up skills are important for this role.
