Shift: Monday- Friday, 8:00am-5:00pm
SUMMARY:
The Truck Shop Manager plays a key role in the planning and overseeing of truck shop operations at their designated terminal and/or designated shift and to ensure repairs are completed accurately, efficiently, and cost-effectively on all shifts. The Manager will supervise technicians, communicate with third party support vendors, set priorities for task assignments, and respond to driver requests for roadside support.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Supervise all truck shop operations and personnel, inclusive of Truck Mechanics, Lube Technicians, Apprentices, Shop Laborers, and Shop Foremen.
- Ensure personnel receive necessary training and have the competencies to complete their job. Delegate work to employees
- Responsible for performance management, hiring, progressive discipline, engaging employees, answering employee questions and concerns, and seek the support of human resources as required
- Ensure all Health and Safety policies, programs, and guidelines are followed and ensure the safety of all employees in the shop.
- Plan preventative maintenance checks and safety inspections to equipment.
- Monitor and manage the Truck Apprenticeship program and employee progress as required
- Ensure compliance with company standards for quality, cost control, waste reduction, safety, and vehicle availability.
- Schedule and plan shifts for staff as required. Ensure staff requirements are met during vacation time, sick leave, stat holidays, etc.
- Repair equipment and road test when required.
- Analyze, diagnose problems, and make decisions on repairs. Decision on major repairs are to be done in conjunction with the Corporate Fleet Director & Shop Manager.
- Review all electronic repair orders according to Company Standard Operating Procedures.
- Work in conjunction with the Reefer Shop Supervisor and Trailer Shop Supervisor, if applicable, to ensure appropriate personnel are available to cover all aspects of fleet maintenance.
- Work in co-operation with operations to ensure equipment availability.
- Co-operate with any administrative requests for information.
- Address Occupational Health and Safety issues as related to the Truck Shop.
- Support and advise other terminal shops as required.
- Sign off on motor vehicle safeties as required. Ensure all documents are completed to ministry standards.
- All other duties as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS/QUALIFICATIONS:
- Appropriate license required. (310T – Ontario)
- Must be an active member of the College of Trades
- Minimum College diploma required.
- Proven supervisory skills established through previous supervisory experience.
- Experience working with an automated fleet maintenance system, maintenance cost analyses, and mechanic labour standards.
- Minimum 8 years of experience with heavy trucks.
- Computer skills (e.g. automated work order system, fleet maintenance costing, spreadsheets, etc.) and ability to look at future automated shop programs.
- Effective leadership skills, with a strong focus on quality, cost-effective fleet maintenance.
- Proven mechanical abilities with a strong working knowledge of mechanical application and repair techniques.
- Strong attention to detail.
- Knowledge of maintaining costs as it relates to operational profitability.
- Strong ability to implement continuous improvement.
- Organizational skills including planning and scheduling skills.
- Quality decision-making skills and ability to use good judgement.
- Positive attitude with proven people skills. Ability to be fair but firm with shop staff, drivers and any outside vendors.
- Excellent communication skills, verbally and written. Ability to provide positive feedback and constructive criticism.
- Proven time management skills and ability to communicate with mechanics regarding fair labour standards on jobs.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Full-time, salaried position
- Position may be required to fill in when and where necessary, depending on the needs of the business.
- Position will be exposed to indoor and outdoor environments and may be subject to conditions such as: dirt, fumes, heavy machinery, fluctuating temperatures, and wet conditions.
