Role Overview
The Hockey Shop is seeking an experienced Senior Accountant to manage and evolve our day-to-day financial operations. This role will integrate the accounting functions of our retail, online, and team sales business units to help fuel our continued growth. You will need to apply proven accounting knowledge and experience in a hands-on retail environment, where Oracle NetSuite ERP knowledge and experience will be a huge asset. We’re a medium-sized, family-owned business searching for a trustworthy professional who shares our passion for hockey and numbers in a non-corporate atmosphere.
You’ll work with a small team in a big environment. We offer a flexible full-time schedule and a competitive salary of $85,000–$95,000/year, with room to grow for the right person. Core Responsibilities & Daily Targets
As Senior Accountant, you are expected to lead by example — contributing directly to these goals while driving and helping the team to achieve all goals of the Accounting Department.
· Oversee, manage, and coordinate all Bookkeeper duties and training.
· Manage daily cash-outs and prepare daily bank deposits – with check & balance.
· Record and reconcile daily sales and payments – all revenue streams & payment methods.
· Reconcile bank and credit card transactions.
· Verify and reconcile expense receipts and product invoices.
· Oversee three-way matching of invoices, packing slips, and purchase orders.
· Oversee & prepare payment runs for final sign-off.
· Manage & oversee all accounts payable & accounts receivable.
· Manage warranty, vendor return, and credit reconciliation.
· Handle month-end reconciliation and close processes.
· Prepare GST, PST, and Corporate Income Tax returns and payments.
· Support the external accounting firm in year-end financial statement preparation.
· Coordinate with front till and other staff as needed.
· Provide administrative support to management as needed.
Strategic Projects
As Senior Accountant, your priority is ensuring daily responsibilities are met consistently. Strategic projects should be progressed when daily responsibilities are on track and as time allows, but need to be continually pushed forward.
· Be a key contributor to evolve NetSuite as a valuable tool for all core responsibilities and strategic projects.
· Conduct financial analysis, budgeting, forecasting, and reporting as needed.
· Implement further accounting checks and balances for manager and owner sign off, including internal and external theft prevention processes.
· Optimize 3-way match and invoice/expense sign off process.
· Evolve expense requisition and matching system.
· Implement sales & payment processer payout sync.
· Improve & develop departmental revenue/expense tracking and budgeting system.
· Improve & develop incoming and outgoing freight reconciliation process.
· Assist the purchasing department with forecasting needs and growth with advanced tools.
· Coordinate and automate accounts receivable tracking and collections.
· Oversee inventory counts and recording.
· Continue to grow in working closely with supplier credit teams and sales reps on accounts payable, finance programs, and co-op opportunities.
· Leverage new software to improve processes, checks & balances, and systems for growth.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree or Diploma in Accounting or Finance (CPA designation is an asset).
- Experience with Oracle NetSuite ERP, implementation experience is a significant advantage.
- Minimum 5 years experience in intermediate to senior-level accounting roles.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Office Suite.
- Experience with basic accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, Sage).
- Experience with retail point-of-sale and inventory management systems, Shopify knowledge is an asset.
- Strong software aptitude and ability to learn new systems.
- Extremely trustworthy with a commitment to long-term growth.
- Strong work ethic, communication skills, and attention to detail.
- Highly organized and accurate in financial management.
- Hockey knowledge and/or experience in hockey retail is an asset.
- Ability to work on-site.
- Financial background check (including criminal record check) and references may be required.
Availability & Scheduling
- Full time, 40 hours per week onsite, with flexible start and end times.
- This is primarily a daytime, Monday to Friday role, which is the normal expectation. But in this senior position, there may be rare occasions where you are expected to provide availability based on the operational needs of the store, including evenings and weekends.
- As a leadership position, the Senior Accountant is responsible for coordinating with the accounting team to always ensure proper departmental coverage.
Compensation Summary
- Competitive salary of $85,000–$95,000/year, with growth potential.
- Medical/dental package after the probationary period. Cost shared 50/50.
