Position Overview
The Meliorist is seeking a creative, organized, and digitally engaged Social Media Coordinator to help grow our online presence, strengthen our brand, and build meaningful connections with students and the broader community.
Working closely with the Editor-in-Chief and other members of The Meliorist team, the Social Media & Marketing Coordinator will help plan, create, and publish digital content that promotes our journalism, opportunities, events, and organizational initiatives. The Coordinator will play an important role in translating The Meliorist's work into engaging, accessible, and visually compelling content across social media platforms.
The role combines content creation, digital marketing, audience engagement, branding, and analytics. The successful candidate will have opportunities to experiment with new ideas, contribute to campaigns, monitor audience trends, and help shape how The Meliorist connects with students in an evolving digital media landscape.
This position is well suited to someone who is creative, curious about digital culture, attentive to trends, and interested in gaining hands-on experience in social media, marketing, communications, or digital storytelling.
Training, mentorship, and opportunities for professional development will be provided throughout the work term.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop, create, and schedule engaging content across The Meliorist's social media platforms.
- Promote articles, events, employment and volunteer opportunities, campaigns, and organizational initiatives through digital channels.
- Transform published stories into engaging social media content that encourages readership and interaction.
- Create graphics, short-form videos, photography, and other multimedia content consistent with The Meliorist's brand identity.
- Assist in planning and implementing social media and marketing campaigns designed to increase readership, engagement, and community awareness.
- Maintain a consistent and recognizable organizational voice and visual identity across digital platforms.
- Monitor social media channels and engage with comments, messages, mentions, and community interactions professionally when appropriate.
- Track social media performance and analyze metrics such as reach, engagement, audience growth, and content performance.
- Prepare periodic reports highlighting digital performance, audience trends, and opportunities for improvement.
- Research emerging social media trends, platform developments, digital marketing strategies, and best practices.
- Identify opportunities to improve The Meliorist's reach and engagement with students and the broader community.
- Collaborate with editors, reporters, photographers, designers, and other contributors to develop promotional and multimedia content.
- Support the promotion of campus events, community partnerships, special projects, and other organizational initiatives.
- Contribute creative ideas that strengthen The Meliorist's digital storytelling, brand presence, and online community.
- Attend scheduled staff meetings and communicate regularly with the Editor-in-Chief regarding content plans, campaigns, deadlines, and performance.
- Represent The Meliorist professionally and uphold its commitment to accountability, inclusivity, independence, and student-first communication.

- Familiarity with major social media platforms and current digital content trends.
- An understanding of how content can be adapted for different platforms, formats, and audiences.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to plan content and meet deadlines.
- Attention to detail and an understanding of the importance of accuracy and consistency in public-facing communications.
- Initiative and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- The ability to collaborate respectfully and effectively within a creative team.
- Curiosity about social media trends, digital culture, marketing, and audience behaviour.
- Flexibility and adaptability as platforms, trends, and organizational priorities evolve.
- Openness to feedback and a willingness to experiment, learn, and develop new skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Google Workspace.
Experience with Canva, Adobe Creative Cloud, social media management tools, photography, videography, video editing, graphic design, analytics, or digital marketing is considered an asset but is not required.
