Fernhill Fencing Inc. is looking for an experienced Carpenter / Deck Builder to join our team full-time in the London, Ontario area.
This position is for someone with strong hands-on carpentry experience who can confidently build decks and other outdoor structures from start to finish. The successful candidate must be able to interpret plans, complete accurate layouts, frame structures properly, solve problems on site, and consistently produce high-quality finished work.
We are looking for someone dependable, skilled, and responsible—someone who takes pride in their craftsmanship, works well with others, and can be trusted to complete projects safely and properly.
What You’ll Be Doing
As a Carpenter / Deck Builder, your responsibilities will include:
- Building wood and composite decks from layout through completion
- Reading and interpreting drawings, measurements, job notes, and site instructions
- Identifying and resolving construction challenges as they arise
- Ensuring projects meet company standards, approved plans, and applicable building requirements
- Communicating with management regarding job progress, materials, scheduling, and site issues
- Communicating professionally and respectfully with customers
- Maintaining a clean, organized, and safe job site
- Taking proper care of company tools, vehicles, trailers, and equipment
What We’re Looking For
We are especially interested in someone with strong deck-building and general carpentry experience who understands how the different parts of a structure work together.
The right person can think ahead, identify potential issues before they become larger problems, and make practical decisions without requiring constant supervision. They remain calm when site conditions or plans change and focus on completing the work correctly.
The ideal candidate will have:
- At least 2–5 years of carpentry, deck-building, framing, or similar construction experience
- Proven experience building decks from start to finish
- Strong knowledge of deck framing, stairs, railings, guards, and finishing work
- Experience working with both wood and composite decking
- Ability to read construction drawings, plans, measurements, and specifications
- Their own basic set of carpentry hand tools.
- Reliable transportation
- Experience with fences, gates, sheds, pergolas, or exterior structures considered an asset
- Leadership or crew-lead experience considered an asset
- A valid Ontario G driver’s licence
- Experience operating saws, lasers, augers, mini skid steers, and general construction tools
- Strong problem-solving and communication skills
- Excellent attention to detail
- A responsible and reliable attitude
