Position: Overnight Attendant
● Primary responsibilities are to support Cedar Place participants and tenants, and maintain the premises to ensure safety and security of the property and program participants
● Reports to Program Coordinator
● Full time, permanent
● Rotational 10 hours night shifts, 4-on, 4-off schedule

The John Howard Society of Nova Scotia (JHSNS) has been actively serving our communities since 1950. Our mission is
effective, just and humane responses to the causes and consequences of crime. We work collaboratively with clients, government and community agencies to support individuals and families who have come into conflict with the law or who are at risk of becoming involved with the criminal justice system. Our core activities include direct service provision, community education, research and resource development and advocacy.

The Overnight Attendant (OA) reports to the Program Coordinator and works collaboratively with the Cedar House Team to ensure the safety and well being of program participants, staff, volunteers and visitors. Our goal is to support vulnerable and at risk clients engaged in participant and community programs.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:
This list is not intended to be an all-inclusive list of the duties and responsibilities of the position, rather it provides a general overview. Patrol all areas of the property and assist participants and visitors with facility access:

● Applies a person-centered approach with clients, which includes using culturally appropriate/sensitive approaches;
● Maintains information and communication logs to and ensure reporting is accurate and up-to-date; this is essential. Prepare incident and information reports summarizing relevant information;
● Ensures conduct is professional and collaborative, and represents JHSNS in a positive image;
● Follows policy and procedures to ensure safety and security at all times;
● Ensures OH&S issues, incidents and complaints are reported and followed-up on or resolved on a timely basis.
● Mitigates hazards associated with working with participants;
● Monitors stock levels of stationery and supplies;
● Mitigates risk in relation to unpredictable and volatile situations;
● Establishes understanding in the areas of diversity, equity, and inclusion;
● Demonstrates experience in working with marginalized adults and/or communities, particularly criminalized population;
● Exhibits sound knowledge of human rights legislation and related law;
● Recognizes behaviours that may result from mental health and addictions; requires an understanding of the behavioural results of trauma;
● Oversees the safety and cleanliness standards of the drop-in centre and detached residential units, taking corrective or remedial action as required;
● Other duties may be required from time-to-time

Working Conditions
● Rotational shifts up to 10 hours in duration, including weekdays, weekends, and holidays.
● The position requires moderate amounts of walking, climbing stairs, standing, sitting, lifting, carrying, and both scheduled and unscheduled interactions with others;
● May require working outside for periods of time - all seasons and weather conditions;
● May include exposure to body fluids, infections, and communicable diseases;
● The position may be fast-paced, demanding, and at times stressful, requiring significant mental effort to analyze information, problem solve and support people.

Experience & Qualifications:
Required:

● Strong written and verbal communication skills;
● Must be able to work as part of a team;
● Demonstrate strong interpersonal communication skills using strength-based, action-oriented approaches for systems navigation across the Social Determinants of Health;
● Previous experience of record keeping and report writing;
● Must complete a Criminal Record and Vulnerable Sector Check -

Note that positive results will not necessarily preclude employment.

● Experience working with diverse populations in a support role.

Competencies & Skills:
● Strong communication skills, both oral and written. Communicates effectively with individuals who experience mental health difficulties; communicates effectively with other JHSNS personnel and community/government partners.

● High degree of cultural competence and cultural sensitivity.
● Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills and the ability to make recommendations and decisions in ambiguous circumstances.
● Strong organizational and time management skills required. Able to work in a fast-paced environment and adapt to change efficiently and effectively.
● Work efficiently as a team member and independently. Ability to be flexible, work positively and collaboratively as a team member.
● Proficiency with technology, including familiarity with Microsoft Office and Google Suite.
● Experience utilizing a trauma-informed approach.
● Training/Certification in the following is considered an asset: Mental Health First Aid, ASIST, NVCI, Standard, First Aid, WHMIS

Pay: $26.00 per hour
