What you'll do
The Substations Growth and Sustainment Department (SGS) is responsible for planning, managing and sustaining more
than 300 BC Hydro substations, i.e. providing planning and engineering expertise, developing business cases for all new
substations, upgrades, expansions and substation equipment programs, creating strategic plans for the replacement /
refurbishment /maintenance of substation equipment, for all high voltage/medium voltage, transmission and distribution
substations. We currently have a challenging and exciting opportunity for a Specialist Engineer in the department.
Successful applicant will be offered a position commensurate with their level of experience.
Specific Duties:
- Engages in the engineering of electrical utility systems and develops specialized expertise in the planning of
transmission / distribution substations.
- Conducts and analyzes technical and economic planning studies related to the expansion of BC Hydro’s electric system,
including determining stations configurations, station capacities, voltage control, comparing system reinforcement
alternatives, and specifying performance requirements for selected system reinforcement.
- Specifies major stations’ high voltage electrical equipment like power transformers, circuit breakers, shunt and series
reactors/ capacitors etc.
- Contributes to the overall development and implementation of Asset Management strategies and policies.
- Engages in load interconnection system impact studies and writes reports.
- Develops and maintains effective professional relationships with internal and external stakeholders to accomplish
department’s objectives.
- Collaborates with Transmission and Distribution Planning, Engineering, Field Operations, Project Delivery and
Transmission and Distribution system Operations to develop optimized plans, implement the substations projects and
support the system operation.
- Makes contribution to the yearly capital plan process, Integrated Resource Plans and Revenue Requirements Application.
- Responsible for the completeness and accuracy of the assigned work and provides recommendations and sound
judgment in line with the overall objectives of the Substations Growth and Sustainment Department / BC Hydro.
What you bring
- Graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering recognized by Canadian Universities or equivalents.
- Registered, or eligible for immediate registration, as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng) with Engineers and Geoscientists of
BC (EGBC).
