Farm Manager — Broiler Breeder Farm
We are a broiler breeder poultry operation near Listowel, Ontario, looking for an experienced and dependable Farm Manager to oversee the day-to-day operation of a 50,000-bird broiler breeder farm.
This is a hands-on leadership position. The successful candidate will be responsible for flock performance, animal care, barn management, biosecurity, employee supervision, farm standards, maintenance coordination, and daily execution.
The owner will remain directly involved in hiring, employee scheduling, payroll, feed ordering, and overall farm business decisions.
We are looking for someone who takes pride in their work, is comfortable working independently, and wants to take ownership of the day-to-day success of the farm.

Role Overview
The Farm Manager will take primary responsibility for the daily operation and performance of the broiler breeder flock.
The successful candidate will work closely with ownership and the farm team to ensure that the birds are properly cared for, production targets are achieved, farm protocols are followed, and the barns and equipment are maintained to a high standard.
This is a hands-on position requiring strong observation, communication, organization, and follow-through.
The goal is to have the farm manager confidently manage the day-to-day operation without requiring the owner to direct routine farm activities.
Key Responsibilities of Flock Management
- Take ownership of the daily care and management of approximately 50,000 broiler breeders
- Monitor flock health, behaviour, mortality, body weight, uniformity, production, egg quality, and overall performance
- Ensure proper water, lighting, ventilation, temperature, and environmental conditions
- Monitor bird condition and identify problems early
- Follow company and farm protocols for flock management
- Maintain accurate flock and production records
- Communicate significant changes or concerns to ownership promptly
Egg Production & Quality
- Monitor egg production and egg quality
- Ensure proper collection, handling, storage, and movement of eggs
- Minimize floor eggs, damaged eggs, dirty eggs, and other quality issues
- Monitor breeder flock performance against expected targets
- Identify production issues and work with ownership and industry representatives to address them
Bird Health & Welfare
- Monitor daily bird health and welfare
- Follow established vaccination, treatment, and health protocols
- Coordinate with the veterinarian and poultry company representatives when required
- Identify sick or injured birds and ensure appropriate action is taken
- Maintain high standards of animal welfare
- Monitor mortality and investigate unusual changes
Biosecurity
- Maintain and enforce high standards of farm biosecurity
- Ensure employees and visitors follow farm biosecurity protocols
- Monitor barn access and cleanliness
- Maintain appropriate sanitation and disease-prevention procedures
- Communicate any biosecurity concerns to ownership immediately
Employee Supervision
The Farm Manager will supervise the day-to-day work of approximately 3 full-time employees and 2 part-time employees.
Responsibilities include:
- Clearly communicate daily work priorities
- Ensure employees understand farm procedures and expectations
- Monitor work quality and follow-through
- Train employees on farm standards and procedures
- Provide direction and leadership during daily farm activities
- Address performance or work-quality issues with employees and communicate significant concerns to ownership
- Help create a respectful, cooperative, and accountable workplace
Hiring, payroll, and employee scheduling will remain the responsibility of ownership.
Daily Farm Operations
- Organize and prioritize daily farm activities
- Make sure important work is completed properly and on time
- Follow up on unfinished or outstanding work
- Maintain high standards of barn cleanliness and organization
- Monitor supplies and communicate ordering needs to ownership
- Loading egg truck twice weekly
- Keep the owner informed of important operational issues
- Take initiative rather than waiting for direction on routine farm matters
Equipment & Maintenance
- Monitor barns, equipment, ventilation systems, feeding and watering systems, generators, and other farm infrastructure
- Identify maintenance problems before they become major issues
- Communicate repair requirements to ownership
- Coordinate with contractors or service personnel when requested
- Assist with routine maintenance and farm repairs where appropriate
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe working environment inside and outside
- Grass cutting
- Snow removal with telehandler
Communication With Ownership
The Farm Manager will maintain regular communication with ownership regarding:
- Flock health and performance
- Production results
- Mortality
- Employee performance
- Maintenance and equipment issues
- Biosecurity concerns
- Supplies and farm needs
- Any unusual or significant farm events
The expectation is that the manager will bring forward problems as well as possible solutions.
Schedule & Farm Coverage
This is a farm management position and therefore requires flexibility.
The Farm Manager is expected to maintain a strong presence on the farm and ensure that important flock and operational needs are addressed.
The position is not intended to be a fixed Monday-to-Friday, 8-hour-per-day position.
There will be times when the manager is required to work additional hours, weekends, holidays, or respond to an urgent farm issue.
At the same time, we recognize the importance of maintaining a reasonable work-life balance.
Weekend coverage and time off will be discussed between the manager and ownership and arranged around the needs of the flock and the farm team.
Living on the farm provides the advantage of being close to the operation, but the manager is not expected to be working continuously simply because they live on-site.
Compensation & Benefits
Starting salary: $70,000–$80,000 per year, depending on experience and qualifications.
An experienced candidate who demonstrates strong broiler breeder management skills may be offered compensation toward the upper end of the range.

Compensation will be reviewed after the first 6–12 months.

- Previous poultry farm experience

- Previous broiler breeder experience

- Previous farm management or lead-hand experience
- Experience operating machinery such as skid-steer, telehandler, front end loader
