Context

If you are an innovative Clinical Therapist and you are looking for an opportunity to make a difference in the Indigenous community, consider joining the Mental Wellness Team at Wabano! Wabano is seeking positive, community-minded team members who are energized by challenge and motivated to serve our community.

Applicants must be a Registered Psychotherapist or in the process of registration with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO), with a Master’s Degree in Counselling, Social Work or Clinical Psychology and training in child and youth development, play therapy, art therapy or other creative arts therapeutic techniques.

As an organization who works with the Indigenous community of Ottawa, it’s important that we provide opportunities to our community first, so First Nations, Inuit or Métis candidates will be given priority – please self-identify.

The Role

Some of the responsibilities of this position are:

Provide brief clinical counselling/psychotherapy to individuals of all ages during walk-in hours;
Provide extended psychotherapy to youth or adults requiring further support;
Provide culturally appropriate direct service including client assessment, intervention and referrals;
Create and maintain cooperative working relationships with community agencies, schools, courts, child welfare workers, etc. in order to make referrals and mobilize community resources for client welfare;
Provide quality client care that is consistent with best practice, agency standards and evidence-based approaches (particularly brief, narrative, solution focused therapies for walk-in counselling and trauma informed approaches for longer term psychotherapy);
Coordinate professional development;
Facilitate and/or co-facilitate group healing processes for community members;
Entry and maintenance of client records in EMR system and databases, ensuring sharing and receiving referrals, monitoring referral status;
Completing reports as required.

Qualifications

Master’s degree in Counselling, Social Work, Clinical Psychology;
Current registration (or eligibility) with CRPO, membership with CCPA or OCRT, OASW & OCSWSSW or other professional associations as applicable;
Experience working with children, youth and their families in both individual and group settings (an asset);
Minimum of three years of experience working with adults in both individual and group settings;
Formal training and experience in art therapy, play therapy or other therapeutic techniques;
Experience with addressing complex needs, including trauma, grief, bullying, ADHD, self-injury, acting out behaviours, etc.;
Evidence of thorough knowledge of impacts of family violence, abuse, addiction, residential school and intergenerational trauma;
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with Indigenous people, including sound knowledge and understanding of issues impacting mental, emotional, physical and spiritual health in contemporary society;
Positive, non-judgemental and inclusive towards people experiencing problematic substance abuse or criminal justice involvement;
Ability to work flexible hours including evenings and weekends;
Successful applicants would be required to submit a clear criminal reference check for vulnerable sector.

Salary Range: $70,000 – $75,000
