Senior Project Manager – ICI Construction
Location: Remote in Ontario, physically in London, Hybrid in Ontario
Project Type: Major Institutional / ICI Construction
Employment Type: Full-Time, Permanent
Blackridge Search Group is partnering with an established Ontario general contractor to recruit an experienced Senior Project Manager for a significant ground-up institutional project.
This is not a project administration role.
We are looking for a true GC-side construction Project Manager who can take ownership of a major build, lead the project team, work closely with the Site Superintendent, manage cost and schedule, and make strong construction decisions when issues arise.
The immediate project is a major educational facility valued at approximately $50M, with future opportunities across Ontario.
The Role
As Senior Project Manager, you will have overall responsibility for successful project delivery from planning through closeout.
You will work closely with the Superintendent and broader project team to ensure the project is delivered safely, on schedule, on budget, and to the required quality standards.
Key responsibilities will include:
- Leading the project team from pre-construction through completion
- Working closely with the Site Superintendent to coordinate field and office execution
- Managing project budgets, forecasting, cost control and financial performance
- Developing, maintaining and monitoring project schedules
- Managing subcontractors, trade packages and procurement
- Reviewing drawings, specifications and scopes for constructability
- Identifying potential risks, conflicts and coordination issues before they impact the project
- Managing RFIs, change orders, contracts and project documentation
- Coordinating with owners, consultants, architects, engineers and other stakeholders
- Leading project meetings and ensuring action items are followed through
- Supporting tendering, subcontractor selection and negotiations
- Monitoring schedule impacts and developing recovery strategies where required
- Maintaining strong communication between site and office teams
- Managing project closeout, commissioning and turnover
What We’re Looking For
The strongest candidates will have spent their careers building projects for a general contractor and will be comfortable taking full ownership of a major construction project.
You should be able to walk onto site, understand what is happening, challenge a detail or proposed solution when necessary, and have practical construction conversations with Superintendents, trades and consultants.
We are particularly interested in candidates with:
- Strong Project Manager or Senior Project Manager experience with a Canadian general contractor
- Proven responsibility for full-cycle ICI construction projects
- Experience delivering major ground-up projects, ideally in the $25M–$50M+ range
- Strong understanding of construction sequencing, building systems and constructability
- Experience working closely with and providing leadership to Site Superintendents
- Strong cost control, forecasting and contract management skills
- Experience managing subcontractors and significant trade packages
- Strong scheduling and project planning capability
- Experience managing RFIs, change orders, procurement and project documentation
- Strong client and consultant communication skills
- The ability to make practical, commercially sound construction decisions
- Strong leadership, accountability and ownership mentality
Experience with schools, institutional, municipal or other public-sector projects would be considered a strong asset.
The Type of PM We Want
This opportunity is best suited to someone who sees the entire project as their responsibility.
You are comfortable making decisions.
You understand what is happening in the field, not just what is happening in the project management software.
You build strong relationships with Superintendents and trades.
You can identify problems early, communicate them clearly and develop solutions before they become larger issues.
You are equally comfortable discussing cost, schedule, constructability, contracts and client expectations.
You do not wait for problems to come to you.
This May Not Be the Right Role If…
Your experience has primarily been:
- Project coordination without full project ownership
- Owner/developer-side project management
- Owner’s representative or consulting work
- Managing only one trade or subcontracting discipline
- Primarily administrative project management
- Smaller projects where you have not yet led a substantial construction team
There are excellent careers in all of those areas, but this particular position requires someone who has already demonstrated the ability to lead a significant project from the general contractor’s side of the table.
Location
The immediate project is located in the Owen Sound / Grey-Bruce area.
The company offers flexibility around where the successful candidate is based, including hybrid work where practical, but this is a construction leadership position and regular project-site presence will be required.
Candidates based in areas including:
- London
- Kitchener-Waterloo
- Cambridge
- Guelph
- Grey-Bruce
- Stratford
- Woodstock
- Southwestern Ontario
- Hamilton
- Brantford
- GTA
- Sarnia
are encouraged to apply if they are comfortable travelling to the project as required.
Compensation
A competitive senior-level compensation package will be offered based on experience and project background.
The overall package may include:
- Competitive base salary
- Performance bonus
- RRSP matching
- Benefits
- Vacation
- Additional company-paid time off
- Mileage or travel support as applicable
The client is prepared to be competitive for an exceptional candidate with the right major-project and GC-side experience.
Why Consider This Opportunity?
This is an opportunity to step into a highly visible major project with a contractor that values experienced construction professionals and gives senior project leaders meaningful ownership.
You will have the opportunity to:
- Lead a significant institutional build
- Work closely with experienced construction leadership
- Have real influence over project execution
- Take ownership of cost, schedule and delivery
- Build long-term career potential with an established Ontario contractor
- Work on future projects across Southwestern Ontario
If you are the type of Project Manager who wants to own the build, work closely with the Superintendent, solve problems early and be trusted to make decisions, this could be an excellent fit.
