Job Overview
We are seeking a skilled and responsible Second Mate (Marine Navigation & Safety Officer) to join our articulated tug & barge crew on the Great Lakes. This vital role involves ensuring the safe navigation of a vessel, maintaining safety protocols, and supporting the crew in operational duties. The ideal candidate will possess strong Deck Officer knowledge and experience in cargo handling, rigging skills, with a commitment to maritime safety standards and efficient vessel operation. Ability to communicate in English is a must.
Duties
- Assist in navigation planning and execution, utilizing & updating charts, ECS and other navigational tools to ensure safe passage.
- Oversee safety procedures onboard, including safety drills, equipment checks, safety reports and compliance with maritime regulations.
- Support the captain and deck crew in maneuvering the vessel during docking, undocking, and transit operations.
- Conduct routine inspections & tests of safety gear, radio equipment, rigging systems, and mechanical components to identify potential issues.
- Maintain accurate logs of voyage details, cargo/ballast operations, safety incidents, and operational activities.
- Collaborate with the engineering team during cargo operations and ensure vessel's integrity, carry navigational & deck watch
- Assist in emergency response procedures when necessary, ensuring crew safety at all times, conduct safety familiarization & training of new crew
Experience
- Proven experience as a Second Mate on commercial cargo ships, preferably tankers
- Strong knowledge of marine navigation systems, PC MS Word/Excel softwares & safety protocols
- Hands-on experience with bulk cargoes/tanker operations and cargogear systems onboard tankers.
- Demonstrated ability to perform navigation & safety equipment maintenance tasks without supervision
- Valid Transport Canada OOW license is required as well as the ability to obtain US C-1/D visa if non-Canadian citizen/Permanent resident or CUAET temporary work permit holder
- Prior experience with safety management systems and emergency procedures is desirable.
