About Les Muses Chorale
Les Muses Chorale is an established soprano/alto choral ensemble based at McGill University in Montreal. Moving into our 26th season, we are a vibrant community of 30 to 40 singers dedicated to exploring diverse, high-quality choral repertoire. Operating as a student club under the Students' Society of McGill University (SSMU), our ensemble prioritizes inclusivity, choral excellence, and a supportive community environment.
Our repertoire spans 20th and 21st-century works, alongside classical and contemporary international pieces, with a strong emphasis on Canadian composers.
Position Overview
We are seeking a dynamic, collaborative, and structured Music Director to lead our artistic vision starting January 2027. Because our ensemble is managed by an elected student Executive Team handling all administrative responsibilities (finances, logistics, room bookings, and sectionals), the Music Director’s role focus is purely musical.
Key Responsibilities
- Artistic Leadership: Plan, program, and select performance repertoire for 3–4 annual performances (including major concerts in late Autumn and early Spring).
- Rehearsals & Performance: Conduct weekly 3-hour evening rehearsals and lead all formal performances.
- Auditions: Conduct placement auditions for incoming choristers and evaluate soloists as needed.
- Collaboration: Work closely alongside the student Executive Team to maintain positive communication, high choir morale, and alignment on special projects.
- Personnel Coordination: Source and recommend collaborative accompanists when required.
Selection Criteria
- Education/Experience: A diploma in music, choral conducting, or equivalent professional conducting experience.
- Repertoire Knowledge: Deep familiarity with diverse soprano/alto (women’s) choral literature.
- Communication Skills: Strong English proficiency is required; a functional understanding of French is highly valued. Knowledge of diction in multiple languages is a strong asset.
- Leadership Style: Encouraging, organized, and positive leadership approach tailored to working with university-aged student musicians.
- Technical Skill: Clear gesture-based communication to effectively shape ensemble blend, dynamics, and expression.
Compensation & Timeline
- Salary: Competitive compensation, structured as a fixed monthly payment across the 8-month active season (September to April), commensurate with experience and qualifications.
- Term: Active duties align strictly with the academic calendar (Fall and Winter semesters).
Application & Selection Process
Shortlisted candidates will be contacted following the application deadline to proceed through our review process:
- Repertoire Proposal: Selected applicants will be asked to draft a sample 60-minute concert program.
- Executive Interview: A preliminary interview with members of the Executive Team.
- Ensemble Audition: A 40-minute practical audition conducting the choir during a scheduled rehearsal time, followed by a brief panel interview.
