Summary

Role Overview

The Financial Analyst is responsible for the financial monitoring, analysis, and reporting of construction projects from pre-conception through to closeout. This role bridges project management and corporate finance, providing project managers, estimators, and executives with the financial visibility needed to maximize profitability, manage cash flow, and mitigate risk.

Key Responsibilities

1. Project Cost Control & WIP Analysis

Perform monthly Work-In-Progress (WIP) analysis, reviewing contract values, estimated costs at completion (EAC), and recognized revenue.
Monitor and analyze project budget variances (Actual vs. Budgeted costs), identifying trends and flag potential cost overruns early.
Collaborate with Project Managers (PMs) to review and update monthly cost forecasts and progress billings.
Track and reconcile labor, material, equipment, and subcontractor costs against the schedule of values.

2. Cash Flow & Revenue Management

Monitor project-level cash flow, tracking holdback/retainage receivables and payables.
Analyze billing milestones to ensure timely invoicing and optimized cash positions (managing over-billings and under-billings).
Assist in evaluating subcontractor financial viability and tracking performance bonds and statutory declarations.

3. Budgeting, Forecasting & Corporate Reporting

Assist in the preparation of the annual corporate budget and quarterly financial forecasts.
Allocate indirect costs and equipment overhead to active projects using established costing methodologies.
Prepare monthly financial dashboards and Key Performance Indicator (KPI) reports for executive leadership.

4. Process Improvement & ERP Support

Contribute to the optimization of project accounting software and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) workflows (e.g., automated tracking, change order management).
Ensure compliance with internal financial controls and standard operating procedures across field and office teams.

Qualifications & Skills

Education & Experience

Bachelor’s Degree in Finance, Accounting, or a related business field.
Professional Designation: Progress toward or completion of a professional accounting designation (e.g., CPA) is highly desirable.
Experience: 2–5 years of financial analysis experience, ideally within the construction, engineering, or real estate development industries.

Technical Skills

Construction Accounting Knowledge: Strong understanding of job costing, percentage-of-completion revenue recognition, and holdback/retainage accounting.
Software Proficiency: Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel (complex modeling, lookups, pivot tables). Experience with modern construction ERP systems (e.g., Acumatica, Jonas, Viewpoint, or Sage) is a major asset.

Soft Skills

Communication: Ability to effectively communicate complex financial concepts to non-financial operational staff and project teams.
Analytical Thinking: High attention to detail with the ability to spot trends and anomalies within dense project data.
