PEI School Food Program Inc. is a not-for-profit organization responsible for successfully developing and delivering the school lunch program in Public Schools Branch (PSB) and Commission de Langue Française (CSLF) schools. Our mission is to cultivate a healthy and inclusive food culture in Island schools. The program provides equitable access to families by offering a “pay-what-you-can” (PWYC) payment model (meal value of $5.75)
Kitchen Manager- Summerside, PEI
The Kitchen Manager will be a key member of the Food Service Team responsible for managing the food service program and supervising Kitchen Assistant(s) and Cook at the Summerside Intermediate School Food Service Hub. They will be responsible for ordering, receiving and maintaining all requirements, including but not limited to food required for the program. Day-to-day activities will include meeting the kitchen's health and safety regulations and preparing and serving hot and cold meals prepared from scratch to students. This fast-paced, rewarding position provides nutritious meals to school-age children.
Roles and Responsibilities:
Management of Kitchen Assistant(s) and Cook
- Collaborate with Food Service Manager to assess staffing requirements at assigned hub,
- Train, supervise and performance manage Kitchen Assistant(s) and Cook,
- Assign work to Kitchen Assistant(s) and Cook,
- Approve time off requests for Kitchen Assistant(s) and Cooks, and
- Schedule Kitchen Assistant(s), Cook, and Casual staff (as approved by Food Service Manager)
Food Service- Bon Appétit Program & Grab n Go Cafeteria Program
- Prepare and place food orders according to program needs,
- Receive and store products and maintain records,
- Prepare hot and cold meals from scratch using standardized recipes,
- Keep temperature and sanitation logs and other necessary reports,
- Coordinate delivery of meals to nearby schools,
- Manage, track, and report inventory
- Comply with health, hygiene, and sanitation regulations
- Prepare cost-effective recipes for grab n’ go program that meet School Food Environment Guidelines
- Serve meals to students and collect payment,
- Reconcile cash with Point-of-Sale system and deposit to the bank,
- Assist in menu planning and the development of standardized recipes, and
- Assist in the set-up of new School Food hubs
Other
- Assist in mentoring of new Kitchen Managers at other locations,
- Provide input and feedback to the Management team for program improvement,
- Attend team meetings,
- Engage students in food literacy activities whenever possible, and
- Other duties as required.
Education Requirements:
- Current food safety training certification
- Post-secondary education in a culinary arts program and/or Red Seal certification is required
Experience:
- Minimum 2 years’ experience in a leadership role or supervisory role in the food service industry
- Minimum 3 years’ experience in cooking large quantities of food from scratch (ie: banquet, catering, centralized kitchens, etc.)
- Current food safety training and certification
- Experience and/or training in human resource management (scheduling, performance management, onboarding/training etc.) considered an asset
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of cost-effective menu preparation, pricing, purchasing, inventory, and basic record keeping
- Understanding and experience with food service budgeting
- Adaptable to the needs of the students and the ability to be creative with food and menus for special dietary requirements
- Ability to effectively supervise others and work well with limited supervision
- Possess good interpersonal skills and a strong customer service orientation
- Exceptional organizational and time management skills
- Excellent communication skills, both written and oral
- Enthusiastic and motivated team player
- Basic computer skills (Microsoft Excel, Word, etc.)
The PEI School Food Program offers a competitive salary of $27.16 per hour, an attractive benefits package (including health and dental) wellness spending, and an RRSP matching package after a one-year anniversary. This position will be full-time, Monday-Friday, year-round. Flexibility to work a 10-month continued contract, if preferred.
