Taber Special Needs Society has been operating for 30+ years providing accredited supports as a not-for-profit charitable society in the community of Taber and the surrounding area for youth and adults with developmental disabilities.
Rotation: This position is an average of 21 hours per week on a three-week rotation. This position is mostly weekends with one shift during the week. Hours are 3pm to 11pm.
Job Overview: Supporting one young woman in her residence and in the community. You will be assisting in all areas of her life, this includes but not limited to dietary needs, hygiene, money transactions, shopping, crafts, and recreation. This position can be very physically demanding at times, must be able to walk a minimum of 4 blocks pushing a wheelchair and able to lift a minimum of 25 lbs. There are extended periods of time where you will be working alone with just the individual in their residence and also times of going out in the community for all different types of activities as we work on expanding her access to all areas of her community.
This position works best with someone who can show confidence yet have a quiet demeanor that can assist in the young woman feeling secure and calm.
Key Responsibilities: Actively assisting an individual in achieving personal goals, assisting the individual with life skills, personal care, recreation activities and community inclusion. Assist the individual through behavioral challenges.
Serve as a positive role model in social development, healthy living, and independence.
Learn to understand and respond to challenging behaviours while implementing individualized support strategies.
Administer medications as required and assist with personal care and hygiene routines.
Create and implement daily schedules designed for each individual.
Complete daily logs and written reports
Contribute to a positive, inclusive, and collaborative team environment.
Adhere to Taber Special Needs policies and procedures
Qualifications: Experience with behavior is an asset, as well as being able to handle a physically demanding day, be able to work well both alone and in a team environment. Comfortable with all aspects of personal care. Flexibility and being able to adapt to changes are important. Valid driver’s license, high school diploma or equivalent, and successful criminal record check. Ability to work effectively in a team and build positive relationships with individuals, team members, and families. $2 million in 3rd party liability insurance showing you as primary driver. - Require a successful criminal record check accessing the vulnerable person sector. - 18 years of age. - Proficient in verbal and written English.
