Position Overview
As a Ski Guide at Northern Escape Heli-Skiing, you are responsible for leading guests through complex mountain terrain while effectively managing risk and providing an exceptional heli-ski experience.
You will work closely with fellow guides, pilots, and operations staff to deliver safe, efficient, and enjoyable ski programs. Successful candidates demonstrate strong decision-making skills, sound judgment, excellent communication, and a genuine passion for mountain guiding and guest service.
Our guides are expected to be leaders in the field, ambassadors for the company, and active contributors to our collaborative safety culture.
Key Responsibilities
Mountain Operations
- Lead guests safely through mountainous terrain.
- Assess and manage avalanche, weather, terrain, and operational hazards.
- Apply sound risk management principles and decision-making processes.
- Participate actively in morning and evening guide meetings.
- Contribute observations and professional input to operational planning and hazard assessments.
- Maintain familiarity with terrain, snowpack, weather patterns, and operational procedures.
- Exercise authority to challenge or veto decisions that may compromise safety.
Guest Experience
- Deliver exceptional guest service both on the mountain and within the lodge environment.
- Foster a positive, professional, and welcoming atmosphere for guests.
- Provide coaching and technical skiing instruction when appropriate.
- Communicate clearly and effectively with guests of varying skiing abilities and backgrounds.
- Help create memorable experiences that exceed guest expectations.
Teamwork & Leadership
- Work collaboratively with guides, pilots, maintenance personnel, and lodge staff.
- Mentor and support apprentice and developing guides.
- Demonstrate professionalism and leadership at all times.
- Contribute positively to Northern Escape's culture of teamwork, learning, and continuous improvement.
Professional Standards
- Maintain all required certifications and memberships.
- Remain current with industry best practices in avalanche risk management and mountain guiding.
- Maintain personal equipment and safety gear to professional standards.
- Uphold all company policies, procedures, and safety protocols.
Qualifications
Required
- ACMG Ski Guide, ACMG Apprentice Ski Guide, CSGA Level 3, IFMGA Mountain Guide, or equivalent internationally recognized certification.
- Advanced First Aid certification (80-hour minimum).
- Demonstrated backcountry skiing and avalanche hazard management experience.
- Strong skiing ability in complex mountain terrain.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work effectively within a professional team environment.
Preferred
- Previous heli-ski guiding experience. (3 years or more)
- CAA Avalanche Operations Level 2 or higher.
- WorkSafeBC Avalanche Control Blaster certification.
- Class 4 Driver's License.
- Additional language skills.
- Experience working in remote lodge-based operations.

Working Conditions
- Remote, lodge-based work environment.
- Rotational schedule throughout the winter season.
- Long days in demanding mountain conditions.
- Ability to lift and carry equipment weighing up to 50 lbs.
- Weekend and holiday work required based on operational needs.
- Extended periods outdoors in winter mountain environments.
Equipment Requirements
Guides are responsible for supplying:
- Ski boots.
- Personal skiing equipment and technical clothing.
- Helmet meeting WorkSafeBC requirements.
- Personal guide tools and pack contents consistent with HeliCat Canada standards.
- Appropriate lodge attire for guest interaction.
Northern Escape provides:
- Guide uniform.
- Avalanche transceiver.
- Airbag backpack.
- Additional operational safety equipment as required.
