Position Summary:
Assist the Town in achieving high performance through best practices at the Beaver Valley Community Centre and Municipal Golf Course.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Operate and maintain vehicles, equipment and perform work processes required consistent with janitorial, preventative maintenance requirements, and turf and grounds management within Municipal Golf Course and BVCC.
- Assist with all requirements through the Integrated Pest Management Council of Canada including but not limited to weekly scouting reports, product applications, turf maintenance, and equipment calibrations.
- Maintain golf course specific areas such as bunkers, greens (specifically bentgrass), water hazards, artificial turfs, and tree farms.
- Operate and maintain vehicles and trailers under the Town’s E-fleet program. This also includes required documentation of logs and records under the Ministry of Transportation regulations.
- Operate a variety of heavy and light powered equipment such as tractor with attachments, riding lawn mowers, chain saws and hand tools necessary in performing general landscaping and maintenance of all municipal sites maintained under Community Services. Specific tasks include cutting grass, raking grass, chainsaw operation, repairing lands, maintaining athletic fields, golf course maintenance, construction of tables, construction of benches, planting, watering, and providing care for nursery stock opening and securing buildings and general manual labour.
- Provides leadership and guidance to seasonal staff and students when they are the senior staff on site.
- Safely utilize and care for any chemicals under Workplace Hazardous Material Information System requirements.
- Under the direction of certified supervisory staff, apply fertilizer and pesticides as required.
- Monitor the safe operation of the registered refrigeration plant under the Technical Standards and Safety Authority and Code B51 – Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code
- Perform and maintain proper ice maintenance, which includes: flooding and scraping ice; edger operations; performing board and gate repairs, replacing rink glass; conducting ice machine maintenance (e.g., blade replacement).
- Assist in the daily operations and maintenance of the arena, which includes: receiving and responding to incoming enquires and concerns; fostering good working relationships and public safety awareness and providing any facility security necessary; assigning dressing rooms and keys to patrons; maintaining current knowledge of scheduled activities and events.
- Conduct opening/closing duties, which include: activate/de-activate security alarm; checking fire alarm panel; removing snow from all entrances and exits; activate appropriate lighting for scheduled arena activities; performing end of shift security and alarm checks.
- Liaise with other departments, ratepayers, and the public, as well as special interest groups on matters pertaining to the BVCC and Tomahawk Golf
- Participate in rotation of “on-call emergency pager” as established and be available to immediately respond to after hours and weekend calls, where appropriate.
- Perform all work activities in a manner which meets all health and safety policies, laws or regulations.
- Promotes a high standard of customer service to the public as well as to all internal customers.
- To perform other duties as assigned from time to time
What you will need:
- Requires high school diploma.
- Basic Refrigeration is an asset
- Minimum 2 years of work experience in Facilities Maintenance, Grounds and Turf Maintenance and Operations is an asset
- Working at Heights Certification is considered an asset
- Proven skill and ability required to perform general repairs and maintenance.
- Knowledge of security and emergency procedures to ensure the security of all facilities and the safety of patrons including Standard First Aid, CPR C & AED.
- Proven communication skills to respond to general information requests from internal and external customers.
- Ability to interpret and comply with Town policies and procedures
- Able to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing
- Able to work well under pressure and tight time constraints
- Strong attention to detail
- Physical ability to perform cleaning and maintenance activities
- Ability to use hand tools, ladders, and work with mechanical components.
- Must be able to work independently, as well as function in a group as a team player.
- Must be prepared and able to work both indoors and out and in all seasons; weather conditions ranging from very cold to very hot and humid and able to work in an environment with exposure to cleaning materials (all required Personal Protective Equipment required is available and must be used).
- Able to work shift with varying start and finish times, including nights, weekends and statutory holidays and in inclement weather.
- Knowledge of cleaning and waxing compounds, heating and ventilating equipment, turf maintenance equipment, irrigating systems, lawn and plant fertilizers and insecticides, floor buffers and custodial equipment, and basic tools utilized in building maintenance and golf course operations.
- Able to work with minimal supervision, follow and carry out instructions.
- Demonstrate interpersonal skills to communicate with staff and to provide clear information.
