This is routine collection of passenger and traffic-related data/counts used for the purpose of analysis and planning of transit services using field sheets and a portable hand-held data collector. This work involves conducting various types of counts such as stationary counts taken at various intersections and terminals; riding counts involving riding a vehicle for a full or split shift; subway peak point counts; station usage counts; cash fare analysis counts; cordon counts; and outside the City of Toronto fare analysis counts. Other miscellaneous counts include: CNE counts; Rogers Centre counts; monthly and annual commuter parking lot counts; use of stop counts; speed and delay counts and occasionally required to conduct verbal passenger surveys.
The work is performed under the direction of the Assistant Supervisor – Data Collection or designate.
The incumbent will be required to perform any combination of the following duties:
- Taking stationary counts at various intersections (may require access to a vehicle for use as shelter when conducting outdoor counts in inclement weather), and rapid transit stations including gathering the transit vehicle and run number, arrival/departure time and load, and route number and destination code;
- Riding transit vehicles for a scheduled continuous shift or split shift to record vehicle arrival and departure times at terminals/stations, times crossing designated intersections, and the number of passengers boarding and alighting at each stop serviced;
- Taking rapid transit peak point counts at selected peak point stations on subway lines and the S.R.T. All trains are timed and an estimation of passengers per car in each direction is taken;
- Surveying the total number of passengers using the subway system at any station on a given day and recording turnstile readings at regular intervals;
- Taking cash fare analysis counts on surface vehicles and at subway entrances to determine the proportion of cash payments made by the four classes of riders (adults, seniors, students and children);
- Counting outside the City of Toronto fares on TTC cross-boundary surface routes and classifying all types of fare media;
- Taking cordon counts by monitoring the number of vehicles and passengers entering and leaving a designated area, past a given screen line. All types of vehicles are listed and totalled separately.
Participate in annual, periodic or non-recurring studies which include:
- C.N.E. annual count program;
- Requested one-time counts;
- Special event counts at Rogers Centre, ScotiaBank Arena, etc.;
- Monthly and annual commuter parking lot counts;
- Speed and delay counts; and
- Use of stop counts.
Required to perform the following tasks for portable hand-held data collectors only:
- converting data to the correct format;
- transmitting data using a modem (supplied) and a land-based telephone line;
- deleting files after the successful transfer of data;
- completing Count Log and Count Completion forms;
- checking status of rechargeable and lithium batteries and re-charging/replacing batteries, as required;
- caring for and performing routine maintenance on the hand-held data collector and accessories supplied to the incumbent; the incumbent is held accountable for the cost of the data collector and accessories if damaged or lost due to negligence or wilful abuse.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
- Training obtained through the completion of grade ten;
- Must have a demonstrated ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions, and communicate effectively;
- Must be detail oriented, ensuring accuracy and completeness of information and possess good, legible handwriting for writing figures and completing reports;
- Must pass a test set by the Department which corresponds in content to the knowledge, theory and/or practical requirements described above;
- Must be able to stand or sit on a transit vehicle for a regularly scheduled shift to collect passenger and traffic-related data;
- Must possess a valid non-probationary Class “G” or better Ontario Driver’s License and a clean driving record.
