Neh gaaw saga'igan is the local translation of Sandy Lake, where the people traditionally and continues to live off the abundance of land as hunters and gatherers. Though wild game is still a staple in the diets of many, today the people of Sandy Lake enjoy games and sports such as hockey, volleyball, softball, taekwondo, golf, and other modern sports.
Located 450 km northeast of Winnipeg and 600 km northwest of Thunder Bay, we are a remote, fly-in First Nation community located in the boreal forested area of Northwestern Ontario along the Severn River. Beautiful landscapes surround our community, giving our people the opportunity for outdoor and social activities all-year-round. In the summer, we go hunting, hiking, kayaking, and fishing. In the winter, we go ice fishing, play ice hockey, and marvel at the beautiful northern lights above our open skies. Currently, the Sandy Lake Board of Education has an exciting opportunity for a High School Tech-Shop Teacher to join our school in Sandy Lake, Ontario.
The successful candidate must relocate to Sandy Lake for the duration of the term, fully immersing themselves in the community to better support and inspire our students.
In this hands-on role, you will introduce students to woodworking and technical shop skills through both classroom instruction and practical learning experiences. You'll help students build confidence while developing valuable technical abilities, creativity, and safe workplace habits that will serve them throughout their lives.
The scope of your responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
- Teaching woodworking and technical shop skills through classroom and practical instruction
- Demonstrating woodworking techniques, including cutting, shaping, assembling, and finishing wood materials
- Teaching and enforcing safe work practices when using woodworking equipment, hand tools, and power tools
- Supervising students during practical shop activities while maintaining a safe learning environment and maintaining shop equipment, tools, and materials while promoting responsible use of resources
- Guiding students through hands-on woodworking projects while encouraging creativity and innovation
- Developing students' problem-solving, critical thinking, and practical technical skills
- Planning engaging lessons that balance theory with practical application and encouraging student participation, confidence, and respect within the classroom
- Attending parent-teacher interviews, staff meetings, and school events
- Taking part in community events and incorporating local culture into classroom learning where appropriate
To qualify, you will ideally hold an Ontario Teaching Certificate.
Candidates with an equivalent teaching certificate from another Canadian province or territory, or who are currently obtaining Ontario certification, may also be considered.
You will also bring experience or strong practical knowledge in woodworking, carpentry, technical education, or another related skilled trade. Experience safely operating woodworking equipment and teaching or mentoring others in a practical setting will be highly regarded.
In addition, the following would be highly valued:
- Experience teaching Technical Education, Woodworking, Construction, Industrial Arts, or a related subject
- Knowledge of shop safety procedures and the safe operation of hand and power tools
- The ability to foster creativity, practical problem-solving, and confidence in students
- Excellent classroom management and communication skills
- A collaborative, patient, and student-centred approach to teaching
- Knowledge of culturally responsive teaching practices and an appreciation for Indigenous perspectives
Sandy Lake School, a First Nations community school, integrates Indigenous culture, language, and spiritual teachings, shaped by the community's values. This approach emphasizes culturally respectful religious education, differing from standard public schools in Ontario.
Knowledge of First Nations culture and experience working with Indigenous students or communities would be considered an asset.
Please note that membership and licensing with the Ontario College of Teachers, along with an updated Criminal Record and Child Abuse Registry Check, will be required for shortlisted candidates.
Compensation is a competitive annual salary of $58,942.57 to $107,903.24, based on your certifications, qualifications, and experience, plus a host of excellent benefits including:
- Extended health, vision, and dental coverage
- Reimbursement for fly-in/fly-out travel expenses of $1500 for individuals and $2000 for families (flights are covered for September and June)
