Role Overview
There is an immediate opening for an Irregular Part time Videographer/Editor at CHEK News.
This position reports to the News Director
Schedule: Must have some weekend availability. Schedule can vary with shifts generally 9:15-5:15pm or 10-6pm
Job Responsibilities
- Working with producers, anchors, and reporters on any other newsroom shooting and editing priorities.
- Will be assigned to shoot and edit speciality segments as needed such as the Upside
· Ingest video and other content efficiently with our editing software.
· Making editorial decisions that uphold our journalistic standards.
· Able to work under pressure to meet tight deadlines quickly and accurately.
· Understand the importance of communication and between producers/reporters/ENG and Control Room.
· Understand the ingest and network workflow with CBC resources and live feeds/Zoom interviews.
· Able to work independently or with a reporter to shoot and edit local news stories.
- Will be assigned to shoot and edit speciality segments as needed such as the Upside
· Demonstrates professionalism and represents CHEK in public in a positive manner.
This individual will work in a variety of settings, including working with sensitive information and in situations where there may be high emotions.
· Has the ability to work with the public in a professional and tactful manner, including using interviewing skills to gather information to accompany video clips.
· Strong attention to detail.
· Experience with both desktop and online editing computer systems.
· Able to access and retrieve content from digital news gathering platforms.
· Able to enter accurate information into rundowns.
Camera Operation Skills
· Understanding manual settings like shutter speed, aperture (f-stop), depth of field (isolation of interview subjects) colour temperature and white balance to ensure proper exposure and focus.
· Lighting Mastery: Ability to use three-point lighting (key, fill, and back lights) to set a mood and highlight subjects effectively.
Audio Quality: Proficiency in using different microphones (lavalier, shotgun) to record clear audio, as poor sound is often less forgivable than imperfect video.
· Equipment Maintenance: Knowledge of how to set up, calibrate, and troubleshoot hardware like streaming boxes, IFB, wireless audio, tripods, and lights.
· Visual Storytelling: Use framing, sequencing, angles, and camera movements to guide the viewer’s focus and build tension or energy.
Qualifications and Requirements include
· Diploma or other equivalent related education in Broadcast Television, Media an asset.
· Skilled in Microsoft Office, Adobe Premiere Pro, Editing software.
· Valid driver’s licence and clean driving record. Must be able to drive a company vehicle independently.
· A minimum of two years’ experience editing/shooting for Broadcast or other relevant experience.
· Ability to carry, transport and lift camera gear, lighting, and cabling. Ie regularly lifting 20-30 lbs. of equipment.
· Strong editorial and storytelling skills.
· The ability to learn and adapt to changing technology and program requirements.
· The ability to work with speed and accuracy in a fast-paced team-oriented environment as well as be able to work independently with minimum supervision.
· Use sound editorial judgment and journalistic ethics in the handling of sensitive material.
· Strong interpersonal skills and a positive attitude are essential.

Pay: $25.26-$38.28 per hour
